"Pop!"

Bad luck bear...

Dismantled the e30 a few weeks ago and sent pieces of the S52B32 to various shops for a rebuild, none of which have returned yet. So I'm daily driving the Z4Mc... Was... Was daily driving.

Looks like my Vanos accumulator bracket had somehow worked itself off the motor and was dangling down and that seems like it weakened the flex portion of the pressure hose causing it to blow up. Lost a liter of oil in about 10 seconds.

So I've got oil on all my belts, oil on my headers, strut towers, intake, front crossmember, control arms, wheels... pretty much the entire front right corner of the car.

Item #6 is what worked itself loose, causing the hose #2 to rupture near the banjo on the flex section. I've gone ahead and ordered the Rogue Engineering replacement, on one hand I wanted to go oem again (it lasted 100,000km) but not many places stock them, and those that do are selling for well over double the cost of RE.

Check your vanos line everyone!

PS: How the fuck do I clean up all this oil without staining all my plastics?

If memory serves, the vanos accumulator bracket is bolted through the motor mount into the block. You should check to make sure your motor mount bolts aren't loose/missing.

When I replaced all my motor mount bolts with the grade 10.9 bolts + Nord locks, I also found that my vanos accumulator line was leaking. I just used a bunch of degreaser, but mine wasn't nearly as bad as your sounds.

For what it's worth, I also ordered a braided steel flexible line from Bimmerworld. It's probably the same one Rogue stocks. It's a bit of a pain to install the bracket bolts, but it seems to work fine. After getting this line though I read that lots of people recommend replacing the flex line after a few years.

Edit: One other thing I remembered from my research... The actual hard line (#2 in your diagram) only had 1 bracket on earlier models. It was replaced by a newer part that had 2 brackets to help minimize failures. The line on my 2007 Z4MC had 2 brackets and it still leaked after only 40K Miles.

Seems like you're correct, would also explain the engine rpm dependent vibration that appeared the day I installed a set of transmission mounts. Best guess is they were already loose and a tiny bit of lifting and lowering the trans during the mount swap was enough to work the bolts completely loose. Hope they just fell out, instead of breaking...

I had pinned the vibration as being mount related so opted to drive it yesterday until I had a chance to remove them last night. Here's hoping that there is no damage to the swaybar or the oil pan, as I hear that can go hand in hand with the mount failing but have not seen pictures of what exactly happens to them.

Not the greatest ownership experience so far, should have bought a Nissan.

varin keep your head up, these things seem to happen occasionall with this hobby, I'm currently running through some potential head issues, comes with the territory however.... i now have some serious disassembly to do I'm my garage which ill tackle as soon as i get the parts needed.

Cant imagine how much a pita that oil covering stuff will be, these cars are getting older so we need to look at maintainance much more seriously as they get older.

There are a few known common issues, and engine mount bolts are definitely on the list.

Also a few VANOS issues, rear swaybar bolts backing out, leaking constant pressure valve.

Aside from this forum, Bill's Web Space also has detailed information on some of these problems and maintenance areas: http://www.billswebspace.com/bmwmc.htm

Got it all fixed up, it was a bit of a process.

In the process of cleaning the oil from the belts/tensioners the bearings in the pulleys died. Luckily I already had everything (tensioner, and all pulleys/belts) on a shelf as a rainy day preparation so I was able to just toss them on.

Day one after the fiasco

Replaced with Rogue Engineering Vanos line, it fits fairly well. I added a second clamp as the kit only came with one, so I pinned it with the oem bolt holes. Otherwise it fit great, routed the way I routed it the only criticism is it could stand to be 1/2" longer.

Cleaned up and with new hardware installed on the motor mount arms, also had 3 missing bolts on the same front corner of the oil pan... not sure what that's all about. Did an oil/filter change, replaced the main belt tensioner and pulleys, and two new belts. It runs great now, but it hasn't exactly been fun.

Glad you noticed the oil pan bolts. I was going to mention those. That's another known issue. I had a few missing when I bought my car.
