It does need to be shorter. Here is the actual part used on our cars.

Check out this thread for how short it should be if you're cutting yours.

Good links and pics here, as well. The M3 DIY has lots of photos and step by steps.

Salty you need to change your avatar to a butt sticking out from under the hood!

Great info. I'm planning on doing the VANOS thing over the 'quiet time' this winter. Thanks for pulling so much information together in one place.

Glad to help, just paying it forward. Here's a link to my parts list. Note you may not want all these parts depending on what your doing. I plan on doing the whole overhaul. I also ordered some extra quantities of bolts and gaskets just in case.

I was traumatized as a teenager when I dropped a valve cover bolt down into an engine while trying to change a valve cover gasket and swore off working on engines. 35 years later, I'm finally getting over it.

Salty
Sounds familiar...

The cam bearing cap nut went down the timing channel somehow:

But I eventually retrieved it:

This was before I decided to tear the whole thing apart.

Gotta love the magnet

Was it swimming in the oil pan?

Hope I don't have to fish for anything this week doing the Vanos.

Sure was.

Put several layers of shop towel or clean rags in the timing chain channel, and make sure there aren't any gaps. That nut sneaked between the timing chain and the inside of the front of the timing cover to rattle its way down to the front of the sump. Sigh.
