Do it! Not sure how you've lived without a race transmission on your street driven car...

My transmission is without 2nd gear and ill need a new one anyway. A reman zf trans from bmw is $3500. For $1400 more i get to keep my original transmission and from what im seeing there is ill get a full race ready trans back ( be nice to have when i turbo it).

There's a core exchange involved... Thanks for the link. May need this at some point.

When they say core, they mean the trans housing or the core gears? Mm still a little confused on that. I want to keep my housing. Its marked with a ZF serial number that can be traced back to the car. I want to keep numbers matching.

Typically the whole unit. The description is a little misleading

. I was of the belief the ZF transmission used in the base Z4's was used in M's too?

Those are automatics.
You can try samsonas 5 speed if you like
that's a dogbox that can shift without needing the clutch, but you need to learn how to drive it first.

It will either be a samsonas dogbox or an e46 M3 getrag or the one from diffsonline

The gertrag wont fit our housing. Its why we have the zf in the first place.

Do you have a proof of anyone that tested this and didn't work?
People's feedback without proof is invaluable.

There have been 2 projects Z4M swap projects on Z4 3.0i using the Z4M drivetrain and a getrag from the E46 M3.

BMW chose this ZF unit because it's the same one used in Z4 3.0i (dimensions wise), Same location for transmission mounts, same shifter length, same driveshaft length, .... It costs less for them.

Z4M was a parts bin back then, the same as the 1M, extra S54s, extra diffs, extra ZF 6-speed before moving to the GS6-53BZ and later to GS6-45BZ. (the ZF 6speed of the Z4M is a GS6-37BZ).

No but im assuming those projects are race car applications with mucho bucks to expand the bell housing and had a custom drive shaft made to fit it.

No no, they're normal Z4 transformed to Z4M.
This happens a lot where i live, there's a couple of talented guys who are guru in transforming normal BMWs into M cars.
they have built around 13 E92 M3s so far, you get a 328 or something like that. they will build you an E92 M3 and you will not be able to tell the difference in terms of driveability and aestetics.

https://www.facebook.com/mmwgarage

EDIT: i forgot to add that they have built around 4 1Ms as well, one of them is tuned to 1000P.

Ok so my mechanic took my transmission out of the car and found some things that are a bit worrying.
I have the uuc short shifter. He showed me the lower retainer clips and bushings in my linkage that had either been worn out or broken completley. He feels that if those are upgraded or replaced then i should be able to get 2nd again.

While the trans was out of the car, me manually shifted the trans selector shaft and got every gear with no problem. Does that make sense to anybody or is there a chance mu trans is still screwed up?

Were you able to get second with the car parked and the engine off?
I would weigh how much it would cost to fix the linkage and put it back in for a try. If it still won't get second, how much extra are you out compared to the cost of the rebuild?

Shifting without the gears rotating is something different that shifting with the gears rotating (the inner workings of the synchro's is not fully tested), but shift linkeage problems are much more common than gearbox problems.
Also completely not be able to get a gear fits a dodgy linkeage, so your mechanic is probably right. It's worth a try

Yea he told me if it is the linkage im looking at like 350 for the labor and repair for it. Which isnt bad considering hes dropping the trans and re-installing for $350 flat. The cheapest i found elsewhere for that was $800.

If it turns out to be the synchro itself then i dont have to pay him the $350. I would however have to pay dan from diffs online 5k and spend 6 hours of my day getting it to him.

Side note. Anybody try these,
http://www.vorshlag.com/product_info...roducts_id=179

Im torn between red and orange.
