Has anyone tried FMU Velocity Stacks on an M Coupe

I saw these and they really peaked my interest has anyone had any experience with them and outside of just looking cool what kind of results do you think we could get?

Any input would be appreciated

I forgot all about FMU and those velocity stacks to be honest.

They are still achingly beautiful to look at and sound gorgeous.

What would be your reason for getting them?

Do these eliminate all filters? Is there a high risk using products such as these? I've always wondered just looking at them, because it seems like a simple but dangerous idea at a glance, and I'm also rebuilding a motor due to debris entering the engine.

I currently run the RPI intake and filter system, as I really did not see that a cold air intake would have performed much better. I also looked at the CSL intake which looks great but the cost vs benefit just did not make sense.

I really want more mid range and power to the wheels without going to a supercharger. I have been kicking around the idea of upgrading to the Dinan High Flow Throttle Bodies, but it seems that you really need to upgrade the cams and some internals. I drive this car about 3 days a week so reliability is important.

The Guys who make these said the have custom filters that fit over the stacks, but I am waiting to hear back from their owners on some suggestions.

I have ran triple side draft webers on a straight six before and the "trumpets" create an amazing sound
However the so called filters (basically a mesh screen) that gets stretched over the end does not filter very well. You can go to a full on filter box but that negates the sound.

They look cool and probably allow for pretty damn good airflow but what about MAF or IAT? Can BOTH be tuned out?

Edit: I also wonder about the temperature of the air they'd be introducing. It seems pulling from their inlet would suck the hottest air in the engine bay into the throttle bodies rather than pulling from below like the stock or CSL style. I guess water injection could compensate for that but with that setup it would get complicated pretty quick since there would have to be more than one injection point.

Looks cool and I bet it sounds awesome, but really only suitable for hard core racecar, where you expect to rebuild the engine about every 100 hours.
As for intake temp, you would probably want a duct in the hood.

Pros:
- Looks amazing
- Will sound amazing

Cons:
- Will be down on power due to higher air temps
- Increased wear on the engine due to more dirt/debris entering the engine

I would either stick with the OE filter box or if I REALLY wanted the extra sound and power I'd go with a CSL intake and a tune to match.

My homie David at 2m Autowerks is currently running velocity stacks on his S54 swapped 3 series. After tune and all he saw gains and it sounds nice...I don't remember the actual numbers though, you could probably ask them.

The length of the trumpet will impact/move the power band. Typically shorter trumpets move the power band to the higher RPM range while longer favor low and mid-range. These look shorter than the stock S54 trumpets.

The most ideal setup for ITBs is an airbox big enough that channels fresh air from outside the engine bay. The screens don't do shit for filtering dust particles. The socks that slip over the trumpets hurt power because they disrupt the laminar flow created by the velocity stack itself.

The stock setup is actually pretty good. The only weak link is the MAF and the smaller air inlet when compared to the CSL box. This is why CSL box is good for about 5-10 hp. But that is usually with tuning since you cannot just remove the MAF from the equation and go.

Removing the MAF requires tuning. IAT needs to still be utilized for air temp correction. Having it as close to the throttles as possible is most ideal. The general belief is that you need to use Alpha-N tuning, which is MAP + TPS based enrichment tuning, but you can tune an ITB car with just TPS. If retaining the stock ECU, then Alpha-N might be the only option to play nice with the rest of the ECU's parameters. On a standalone ECU, TPS only is fine.

I have a highly modified ITB Miata that I have developed over the last 9 years. I am pulling 185 whp out of a stock piston and rod bottom end. Stock is 140 crank and dynos around 110-115 whp. So I have done a great deal of research with ITBs and filter options, etc. FWIW, it's the highest horsepower stock rotating assembly Miata in the world.

I run what's called a sausage filter, which provides enough free space around the trumpets and actually does not impact horsepower. The only downfall is the warmer air from the engine bay, but my IATs do not get very hot when the car is moving. An airbox ducted to the front would have required more cutting than I wanted to perform on a car that I built to be driven on the street.

^WHS. Love the green and blue anodized bits.
Man, I wish we had a timing belt and pulleys like that!
Look how simple that is compared to what we go through with the Vanos, timing chain guide, and leaking timing cover.
