Have you check your brakes? Maybe a brake pad is rubbing and heating up the pad.

I have the same issue and the burning smell came from the hood and near the passenger mirror or wiperblade area. No visible smoke for now as I just replaced the valve cover gasket last summer, but now Im asuming it's the valve cover gasket "AGAIN" for me.

Mine wasn't such a mystery, I ran over a plastic grocery bag that got wrapped up in the front passenger side brake shield and caliper. Even after pulling off as much as I could reach I had a burning plastic melting smell when I parked in the garage and when i turned on the heater, it would pull that smell straight into the cabin. It took several weeks to burn completely off.

What I suggested in post #10 only on the muffler. OP never confirmed whether he looked for this or not.
