Emergency Brake
Has anyone heard of anyone having a problem with the emergency brake locking up? The last few times that I have taken the MZ4 out, when I put the car in reverse the brake will not release. I had to put the car in forward move a few inches and then the car will back out normally.

When you move it forward does it feel like it is still stuck and you have to slip the clutch a bit more to make it move? Then does it come loose with a clunk? If you park outside and it has been very rainy and wet, i is not uncommon for the pads to stick to the rotor overnight. I don't know of a cure for this unless you park it in a garage.

Yes it is parked in the garage every night. I set and released the emergency brake many time and it would no back up. The first time I went forward it moved. No clunking noise. I rev'd the engine up but as long as I was trying reverse it wouldn't let go. Pop the gear in forward it moves easily!

May be time to replace the parking brake shoes, they are drum style against the inside of the HUB section on the rear rotors. Could be down to rivits etc causing binding, ever drive a good ways with the brake on?

It happens occasionally to me if the car has been sitting for several days. I park in the garage as well. 23k miles on mine. It's only happened once were it got really stuck and I had to pull it forward before I could go into reverse. Most of the time it's just a quick stick and then breaks loose.

So I am guessing that this is nothing to worry about. I have only 35,000 miles on my M Coupe. Since the car sits in the garage for 4 to 5 days at a time. I'm guessing it's the same problem that you're having.

Ditto...that's why I don't use the parking brake anymore after a car wash until the car is driven again.
