18" winter tires--Good Idea???

Hi All!

I am soon to buy some winter tires for the Coupe and I am pondering my options...
To save some dough, I was thinking of getting 18" tires to put on the current rims instead of getting a whole set of smaller tires and wheels. I know 18" means smaller wall and smaller tread than 17" winter tires but is the difference that diametrical? Or is the case that grip and braking with 18" winters is no different from summer tires therefore rendering them pointless...?
There are clearly more options for 17" whereas only Bridgestone Blizzak LM-60's are available for OEM wheels...

Like always I appreciate any of your opinions and experiences with any type of winter tires.

I am running the LM-60's on 18" stock rims and they are good. A little slippery when it's just wet and when you first start off on snow but at normal highway speeds they are great. You want a narrower tire, diameter is second in regards to mattering. I am running stock sizes and have no issues. Highly recommend.

The LSD works well in the winter but you can easily break traction even with these tires. Just the tires are good and help you regain control easy.

I've used 17" WS-50's (I think they were) on my previous car and they were not as good. I felt good traction but not the same level as what I do now.

I'm now coming to the end of the second set of Pirelli Sottozero 240 winter tyres on my Z4M, they have worked extremely well for 40,000km of winter driving and 5 winters for me. They are 225/45-18 all around on 18x8 rims.

Wow... That's a lot.
I'm taking my snows off the Subi this weekend.

April for me....more concerned about ice, and crazy folk who can't drive when it's slippery or snowy out. Toronto as well...

Yes, yes it is. I just got my Z4 two weeks ago in La Junta and got one good top down ride with it back to Denver - even got a little sunburn.

Now it's snowed pretty much every weekend and I've been driving the Pick'em up truck around most of the time.

Drove home today with the top down tho.. around 50ish so the heater was on full blast, but at least the roads are dry.

Take care

I also use the Pirelli Sottozero 240 winters, 225/45-18 all around on stock rims. They handled the snow well and drive like a summer tire in the dry. You may find fitment an issue for 17s, due to brake/hub clearance issues.

Thanks guys for your input! This all makes much more sense. Now that I have know something, I feel much better about buying them!

But lastly, what about the TPMS? Will the new Bridgestones support them? How does that work...?
