I did that today too. Totally spun it! (BTW, that photo needs to be resized--I kept zooming out but couldn't get it small enough to really see--thought my "zoom" feature was broken until the reply box showed up a 5mm wide!)
Kgolf, thanks for posting. Did my first AutoX today and had a lot of fun--it's helpful to see other folk's runs. (Hopefully the video of my last run pans out.) Edit: Photo looks much better! Yeah, pretty much like that! Last edited by Finnegan; 05-20-2012 at 09:44 PM.. |

What SCCA safety-compliant mounts are folks using on their Z4 M Coupe? I'd like one that can mount inside the cabin, so I can simultaneously see driver and course. When I had an E36, I was thinking of getting one that mounted on the headrest pillar, which is non-existent on our cars.

I use the GoPro curved base and super-glue it to the plastic covering the rear bulkhead:

Nitto NT01. Normally I use my Falken RT-615K for auto cross but never got around to swapping them after the Friday ever at Auto Cross Speedway.

Okay, my first AutoX, so keep that in mind! Yes, I know I have a lot to learn.
I dropped 15 seconds during the day, so I made progress, which is good and fun! Skelekitty was there with me too (no video sadly, the 100+ degree and working the course got to her at the end of the day). She dropped 18 seconds off her time, so good improvement there too. We ran with the local PCA Chapter, who let folks from the BMW Chapter join them as "members for a day" (Porsche club here in Sacramento has a great group of folks). Good folks and good instruction! And the new site at Mather field, well, it's huge. This is a pretty cool video my friend from (and much more experienced AutoXer) BMWCCA put together. His run (Z3M) is on the top of the screen mine on the bottom. It's a great learning tool! I can see where I should have taken a different line in some corners, sacrificed speed for better position, etc. Yes, like I said, a lot to learn. Just looking real quick, you're really wide and apexing late on alot of corners. You'll naturally be more comfortable with your car and get closer with time though.

kklin, that is helpful, especially the "out of phase" concept. It really is a different mindset, and needs a different approach.
The difference for me with AutoX, as opposed to the track, was that everything happened so fast and seemed so abrupt. That's not a bad thing, it's the nature of the sport, and just requires practice and more exposure. As the day went by, I was able to adapt a bit (obviously not enough, but it got better than the start of the day). In any case, thanks for the insight, I love new challenges! |

I'm not an avid auto crosser, I do maybe 2-3 a year tops, and usually have to leave by noon so no timing. Where I find the biggest difference is in BRAKING. On the track, you're really on the brakes, a lot. like THRESHOLD braking for seconds at times. On auto cross, you're only braking to set up the front suspension most of the time. I find myself over-braking for most of the tighter turns and losing way too much time in AX.
In fact, I find karting has far more similar skill sets to AX than AX to track. In karting, the brakes are only used to balance the kart, not to slow the kart down.

I'm the complete opposite. I try to get 10-12 autocross events in, and this year I'll do my first track event.
I'm only on my 3rd year, but I think autocross involve some braking, where you're full on brakes...but it's just for a second, sometimes 2. This is because the fastest you're going is only top of second gear. Some braking is indeed though is tapping or partially braking to transfer weight from one side to another, plant the front end...etc. Autocross does happen extremely fast compared track (I have ridden with many friends), but it takes time getting use to. You can't really look 2 turns ahead on the track, autocross you kinda have to. Time is much more important too on autocross IMO. My runs were 0.6 seconds apart from beginning to end on the front course (starting at cold tires), and the backwards course I was 0.3 seconds apart (with at temp tires). |

Big weekend for me, 2 events!
Saturday, normal points event: Sunday, normal points in AM. Then a special event in the PM. Special event took the top 64 PAX times in the AM and did a runoff. Then the top 32 PAX times from those got into the next field. It was then narrowed to the top 16, and a shootoff bracket then started until 1 remained. I only got to the top 32, but for running street tires in a R-Comp PAX, I'm pretty happy with it. |
