License Plate Screw Size?

Trying to find replacement rear license plate screws and finding it harder than it should be. I have the OEM plate holder on the car, but I just need the screws that attached the plate to the plate holder.

I can find that some BMW's use a M5x.08 thread - but I am not sure that is for our cars? OEM length I found was 8mm - but again, not sure that is for Z4's as well? I need some a touch longer to use a plate frame, but need to have some reference to shoot for since it is not a pass through design. I took them to lowes, but did not find one that they screwed right into.

Anyone have a clue here? Maybe I am not calling it the right thing which is why I cant find anything in search?

Maybe I'm just stupid?

I just got replacements from the dealer (after some idiot cross-threaded one of the screws and managed to break the backing nut out of the plastic mounting frame... oh wait, that was me). They're 8mm long and chromed. M5-0.8 looks right based on my crappy bolt sizer. Be careful with longer ones as they can stick out behind the mounting frame.

What he said. When I went to the dealer to get a handful for both of my cars they just gave them to me.

OK - thanks guys! I want some a tad longer so I can use a frame, but I will watch out!

Thanks!

Those backing nuts are a poor design.
You don't have th cross thread to have them pull out

I ended up rebuilding my frame with flanged nuts that wouldn't pull through.
