Doubt it will end up happening. Municipalities would lose a revenue stream.

Actually, here it's not much of one. As a "fix-it" ticket, all you have to do is mount the plates and they throw out the ticket; you remove it and keep on truckin'. They make no money, and writing the tickets doesn't get people to mount the plates (neither my Z4MC nor my Solstice GXP has one). The best way to make money is to save it by not trying to enforce it.

Thank God

This is my first post and it's appropriate as this topic has bothered me ever since I was old enough to drive. The argument about safety and it being easier for witnesses to ID a car is complete BS. All it does is wreck the front end lines of beautiful looking cars with an ugly white rectangle of unaerodynamic metal. As an IL resident, I seriously doubt this will ever go through, but if it did I'd be pretty happy about it.

that looks very cool - like the old school Jag E-type sticker plates and such.

is that:
-actually a sticker? Or cut metal plate?
-is it leagal to use in Toronto? I've seen some cut plates around Chicago but the cops here will ticket that as soon as they will ticket a car with no front plate.

I recently purchased a 2007 Interlagos Blue Z4 M Coupe and the dealer asked me if I wanted them to drill the front bumper to put the license plate on and I declined. Most municipalities in the Chicago metro area with the exception of the city of Chicago and Melrose Park, to name a few, do not care if you do not have a front license plate.

A few weeks ago I took my car to have it washed and I sat next to a cop who was also getting his patrol SUV washed and he complimented me on the looks of the M Coupe. I told him it's great except that it doesn't have space to put a front plate on it. He told me the law is ridiculous and to not worry about it. Most cops who drive sports cars won't put one on either.

Ultimately, the way I see it is this. The front bumper costs thousands of dollars. A ticket for no front plate costs $50. I'm not going to drill holes in the front bumper and damage it to save $50.

That is pretty much where I landed on the issue. In the city it isn't an issue unless you park on the street, which I try to avoid anyway. I got nailed yesterday because I stopped at Starbucks for under 3 minutes.

My Solstice GXP is street parked and gives an abject lesson in why I'll never mount a front plate or park be M Coupe out there. The front plate looks awful on the Pontiac, and the bumpers are slowly getting chewed up by people parking via feel.

By the way the law was killed at the subcommittee level. It didn't even make it to the House. There are some Illinois congressmen/senators who are advocating abolition of the front license plate as it would save the state 1-2 million dollars per year in aluminum and production costs, but there is a police organization which is fighting against the law.

I think eventually the front license plate will be dropped as the state budget becomes tighter and tighter. For now though I risk getting ticketed when I drive in Chicago. I'm in the northern suburbs (Deerfield, Buffalo Grove etc) and there's a lot of luxury cars with no front plate driving around and cops couldn't care less. The "mafia" that runs Chicago though is a different story.

You should be ok in Deerfield. I'm right next to you in Buffalo Grove and don't have any issues with the front plate being absent.

I hate this law as well and have never been pulled over for it alone. It is usually just a reason and they truely want to check something else. Waste of time so I got a gomini plate holder and all is good now.

I'd chalk that up to being in the suburbs, where the cops have little else to do but hassle those two greatest scourges of suburbia - youth and minorities. I've never been pulled over by a Chicago cop for NFP. In fact, I had a talk with 3 cops outside a 7-11 recently about the differences between the M Coupe and the E46 M3 that one of them owned, and it never came up. In the city, it's the revenuers (Dept of Revenue) that get you.

IME the plate law only seems to be enforced on parked vehicles in the city of Chicago and O'Hare. I've never received one while moving, and I've lived in suburbs for 4 of the past 5 years within blocks of the police station. I just simply affix a temporary license plate via magnets whenever I need to park on the street in the city.

Of course, they could always use it as an excuse to pull you over for something else, or slap you with an extra $50 ticket if you get pulled over.
