Z4 Roadster all models compared against Mercedes-Benz SLK all models

Hi,

I was taking a look at some other manufacturer's cars in the same segment as the Z4 Roadster - 2 seater Roadsters, either folding hard- or soft-top. While doing this, I came up with a short comparison view at the Mercedes-Benz SLK against the Z4 Roadster models at this time, with points given out, 1 point each for the 1) Faster car (0-100km/h acceleration), 2) Lowest price.

I am sure the prices work out relatively the same in other countries as well, but the prices used in this comparison are the base prices in Finland with no additional equipment.

MB SLK 200 Kompressor:

4 Cylinder inline engine, 1.8 liters, forced induction.
163bhp/240Nm torque
Weight 1390 kg
0-100km/h 7.9 seconds
Base price in Finland: 57.200 euros

Closest competitor would be:

BMW Z4 2.0i Roadster:

4 Cylinder inline engine, 2.0 liters, naturally aspirated.
150bhp/200Nm torque
Weight 1295kg
0-100km/h 8.2 seconds
Base price in Finland: 45.550 euros

Total score: 1:1 - Mercedes barely outperforms, BMW significantly cheaper
--

MB SLK 280:

6 Cylinder V6 engine, 3.0 liters, naturally aspirated.
231bhp/300Nm torque
Weight 1440kg
0-100km/h 6.3 seconds
Base price in Finland: 63.100 euros

Closest competitor would be:

BMW Z4 2.5si Roadster:

6 Cylinder inline I6 engine, 2.5 liters, naturally aspirated.
218bhp/250Nm torque
Weight 1360kg
0-100km/h 6.5 seconds
Base price in Finland: 55.850 euros

Total score: 2:2 - Another very close outperform by Mercedes (3.0l engine beats 2.5l engine by 0.2s in 0-100km/h time... hmm...) and yet another significantly lower price by BMW.
--

MB SLK 350:

6 Cylinder V6 engine, 3.5 liters, naturally aspirated.
272bhp/350Nm torque
Weight: 1465kg
0-100km/h 5.6 seconds
Base price in Finland: 72.100 euros

Closest competitor would be:

BMW Z4 3.0si Roadster:

6 Cylinder inline I6 engine, 3.0 liters, naturally aspirated.
265bhp/315Nm torque
Weight: 1385kg
0-100km/h 5.7 seconds
Base price in Finland: 64.200 euros

Total score: 3:3 - Mercedes 3.5L V6 beats BMW 3.0L I6 by 7 hp and 35Nm... BMW is again almost 10.000 e cheaper.
--

MB SLK 55 AMG:

8 Cylinder V8 engine, 5.4 liters, naturally aspirated.
360hp/510Nm torque
Weight: 1540kg
0-100km/h 4.9 seconds
Base price in Finland: 104.900 euros

Closest competitor would be:

BMW Z4 M Roadster:

6 Cylinder inline I6 engine, 3.2 liters, naturally aspirated.
343hp/365Nm
Weight: 1485kg
0-100km/h 5.0 seconds
Base price in Finland: 89.400 euros

Total score 4:4 - Even 2.2 liters bigger V8 can't beat BMW's 3.2l straight six by more than 0.1s in 0-100km/h time! BMW now nearly 15.000 euros cheaper.

Additional scoring:

Engines: BMW engines are all smaller and nearly as powerful, except for 200K/2.0i Roadster. 1 extra point for BMW. Total score 4:5.
Weight: BMW Roadsters are all nearly 100kg lighter than their SLK counterparts. 1 extra point for BMW. Total score: 4:6.
Base prices:
Total base price of all MB cars in the comparison: 297.300 euros
Total base price of all BMW cars in the comparison: 255.500 euros
BMW cars a total of 41.800 euros cheaper. 1 extra point for BMW.

Total score of this whole comparison: BMW 7 points, Mercedes-Benz 4 points.

Afterword

Two better ones:

Finally, if we wanted, we could have compared BMW Z4 2.5si against the MB SLK 200K, which would have won at 218bhp/250Nm against 163bhp/240Nm, in price at 55.850e vs. 57.200e and in 0-100km/h time 6.5s vs. 7.9s, but we wanted to keep things simpler. I believe BMW's overwhelming superiority is already obvious and well demonstrated by these results.

We could also have thrown the BMW Z4 3.0si against the MB SLK 280, which would have won at 265bhp/315Nm against 231bhp/300Nm, in price it would have lost 64.100 e vs. 63.100 e (nearly the same price.) and in 0-100km/h time it would have won with 5.7s vs. 6.3s.

P.S. Against the SLK 55 AMG we could have thrown Hartge Z50 with 400bhp/500Nm of torque that has achieved 0-100km/h in under 4.5 seconds. It's also a Z4 Roadster chassis.

But as is, without taking into consideration the fact that two more BMW cars could have won in their categories, the final score is 7 to 4 for BMW. If the two BMW cars would have been used in their categories (Z4 2.5si against MB SLK 200K and Z4 3.0si against MB SLK 280), the final score would be 8 to 3 for BMW. (2 more power wins, one less price win.)

This little comparison just goes to show how advanced BMW's engines are even against some of the toughest competition in the world - Mercedes Benz. It does not account for the fact that there will certainly be differences in the basic setups and option levels for all cars (some of them country-specific), and only takes into account the numbers that manufacturers have published for their cars. It also does not take into account the fact that at this time the MB SLK has a folding HARD TOP while the Z4 Roadster only has a fabric top. However, removable hard tops are available for the Z4 Roadster, as is the Z4 Coupé model which has a fixed hard top.

Best regards,

Jussi
