Why no "Z4" emblem on the M cars?

A friend stopped by to look at my Z4 MR. He asked why there was no Z4 emblem on the car. I told him I had no clue...hadn't even noticed!

This has probably been covered before, but I have no idea how to search for such a topic. So...why is there no Z4 emblem on the M cars?

'Cause it has enough "badges" already!

I can venture a serious guess. Usual badging for M cars is ///M[number]. M3, M5, M6. Can't be an M4 (not a 4 series, no such thing anyway), MZ goes against the M[number] format.

I don't believe the Z3 M has a Z4 on it either IIRC.

Interesting. Now I know the answer if/when someone asks me. Assuming I stop long enough for someone to ask.

Because the Z4 M does not exist.

It is technically the M Roadster / Coupe.

Same thing with the Z3 M.

The M Roadster owners used to get mad when some people called it a Z3 M.

"It is not a Z3! It is an M ROADSTER!!!"

A lot of parts searches will still have the Z3M listed as M Roadster, and the Z4M as Z4 M.

I guess after the Z3M, everyone said screw it, and just called it the Z4M anyways.

Even though everyone, including BMW, calls it the Z4 M.

90% of the car is the same but nooo dont call it a Z3.

The 1 Series M coupe also just has an ///M badge

True, I guess they still do.

It does have many, many differences between the Z3 and the Z3M. I think 90% is a little bit too high. I would guess, outside of the standard parts and body panels, maybe they share 25% of the parts.

As was pointed out, this is tradition dating back to the Z3-based M roadster and coupe. Although the argument could not be made when the Z3/Z4 based M cars were made, now this strategy actually makes sense due to the M Performance versions of cars that we will be seeing. These cars are supposed bridge the gap between the regular cars and the full-on M versions. So far, other markets have seen the M550d and the X6 M50d, the new M135i, etc.

As for the 1 M coupe, had BMW not produced the iconic M1, this car would have been badged as such.

They did it to get people confused,

Following happened to me when ordering a windshield for mine.

Me: hey this is Dave, I need a windshield for 2007 BMW m coupe.
Stupid person @ satellite: ugh, 2007 bimmer m coupe got it.
Me: You have one in stock? Great send it over.
stupid person @ safelite: it's not a unicorn car, why would we not stock it?

Few hours later
Guy arrived with a e46 m3 windshield, I mean really now...production of e46 ended in 2006...Not 2007 how could you gotten that wrong.

Long story short, decided to go dealer route with windshield, price difference was $35 between oem and aftermarket. Not only that got it in a day. Safelite Would take 4 days..

Our Z4Ms also run the ///M badge on the left/driver's side of the boot lid instead of the traditional right/passenger's side. Even the 1-series M has it on the right. Not sure why ours are on the left (not that I'm complaining).

I believe it is for weight distribution...

Roadsters have a keyhole on the right side. ///M was put on the left to balance the rear end. Coupes were simply given the same treatment.

Yeah, it's just one of those things. Officially, it's not the Z4M, but BMW calls it that anyways for most publications and advertisements.

M Roadster = Z3M

M Roadster = Z4M

Try ordering parts for that one!!!

The year of production clearly disambiguates the base platform for M Coupe/Roadster ( z3 or z4). This does not prevent lazy vendors from screwing it up.

I put one in and out.

Bead blasted the face of the light assembly. That and the silver tip lights equals no hot spots.
Silver tipped lights are more yellow than amber is the down side.

As an example, the owners manual.

There right on the cover it says Z4 M Roadster / Z4 M Coupe

Mine says M Roadster. Does yours say M Coupe?

I guess the year would keep it clear whether it was a Z3 or Z4

But saying it's not a Z4 (or a Z3) is like saying the M3 isn't 3 Series
