How Often Should You Rebuild Calipers?

Whether it's by mileage or years... just curious. I know some people never do and just buy remanufactured ones later... thoughts?

No reason to unless you are having issues with your brakes. Like a broken seal or something. Just clean up the floating pins during pad changes and you should be good.

No need to rebuild calipers unless the dust boot is cracked or has seperated from the caliper housing. Front caliper rebuild kits as well as guide bushing kits are relatively inexpensive. I buy my Ate rebuild kits from Autohaus AZ.
The Z4M rear caliper rebuild is a PITA and much more challenging than the front calipers as illustrated here:

The kit, P/N 34 21 6 753 682, must be ordered from a dealer and it isn't cheap and you'll need the special tool, P/N 83 30 0 492 459, to press on the dust boot.

I have a 1973 MGB and the calipers have NEVER been rebuilt or touched internally in any way. Bone dry right now with no stuck pistons. Might be because they are fixed and not floating.

Dont know about BMW's though.

Only car I ever had to do this on was a 73 vette. Only reason I saw for it was lack of engineering. Piston diameter vs bore was laughable. Pistons rocked in the bore there was so much difference.

I have a '79 Harley that still has the original seals and it's strong. I would see no reason unless there's an issue. As mentioned above.

Thanks, when I checked the parts list for the front/rear brakes, the diagram & list mentioned rebuild kit was suggested for cars older than 4 years which is why I asked...
