yes, the "big engine" trim levels of the non-M Z4 got a sound generator.

Wow, that was easy, it took me longer to warm the engine up than to pop off the hose, remove the foam and reinstal the tube. So what is it??? Just like a little megaphone that directs sound into the cabin?

Thanks guys, best forum on the internet, so glad I found this place.

Makes me wonder why BMW didn't do something like this on the new M5 instead of pumping fake sound through the speakers.

because you can tune the sound to anything you want through speakers. which is ultra-rice to me

Well. for some reason it didn't work on my M. I removed my firewall grommet, and installed 2 different types of "sound generators". One from a 2003 3.0, and another thats a bit smaller. I routed a pipe to go right next to my supercharger, and even tried running with no pipe coming out of the sound generator end, and no foam. Same thing, car sounds the same. Therefore:

1. The M cars have something blocking sound coming through the firewall, other than a little circular carpet type thing I removed at the hole or:
2. The drum thing inside the sound generator needs some sort of pressure or vacuum for it to work, by being directly routed into the intake. I'm not ready to potentially disrupt my airflow or lose boost by hacking up my supercharged intake.

Here's an idea for you

Step 1: attach stethoscope to intake tube

Step 2: connect the other end of stethoscope to Beer Bong tube

Step 3: attach funnel to fire wall.

I bet you it would work.

When you guys pulled the tube out to pull out the foam, did you have any trouble getting it put back in? Mine is kinda just stuck back in the hole but it's not really sealing very good. I can easily pull it out wheas as when I first pulled it out it was very hard.

It sounds amazing though. I took out all of the foam

Yeah its a pain in the urethra to get it back in properly. Remove the rubber grommet from the firewall, and install it first. Inspect the grommet and see how it forms a seal around the hole. Install it by going around the inside hole (edge) with your fingers to get a good seal. Then just stick the tube into it while slightly twisting back and forth

I rubbed a very small amount of motor oil on the part of the rubber grommet that goes into the firewall, it made it slide right on.

i got to thinking about your little experiment here and have some thoughts for you...

the 3.0si i had with this sound generator was attached to the lower air boot between the MAF and the throttle. this would mean that there HAS to be some sort of valving in the resonator, otherwise there would be strong fuel smells inside the cabin; certainly if the car has been sitting in a garage with the windows up. the valve must work under neg pressure created by the engine sucking in air. the sound is traveling much faster from the engine to the cabin than the air traveling the opposite direction, which is a funny and simple use of physics. side note: this also means, that if you remove all of the foam, you're essentially creating an unfiltered hole for solids to go wizzing straight into the intake. i'm picturing a very terrified spider screaming "WTF?!" at the top of his little spider lungs shortly before seeing the most beautiful array of throttle bodies throbbing in an ominous orange color, and him suddenly being ok with the decision to trot under the dash of a z4m that day.

i believe it is possible to get this to work in a z4m, and will be looking into possible options this week. i'll be sure to update if i find anything.

No. Both older and newer sound generators transfer the sound through a drum style membrane inside which does not allow air to travel through it. Like a big ear drum

that makes sense. dummy-proof the system.

it looks like the pic you included has the pipe attached upstream of the SC... is this correct?

I didn't attach the "sound receiving" side to anything, just placed the open end next to the blower. I tried all kinds of variables, but didn't want to drill into my piping, fearing a potential boost leak

You have stock exhaust on your VT2-500 M?
I have El Diablo's on my non-blown M.
Sound generation is no longer a problem.
Sets off alarms on parked cars when I drive by.

Here is a link and a pic.. Sound generator assembly is circled.....

I would like to add this also. I have a 2007 3.0i N52.
Is there 3 or 4 parts to buy?
Doesn't look like there is a way on my car to attach red part to the blue in this pic.
Do I have to replace the blue part also? I don't see a hole on it.

This thread has been going on a long time. Just bought a '06 3.0Si that came with the sound generator. It sounded aggressive sometimes, at other rev ranges and gears the resonance sounded like a leaky muffler behind the dashboard. decided to disconnect it.
Removed the hose, and used rubber rear shock absorber covers from the Z3 and E36 to cover the sound generator outlet, and plug the rubber grommet in the firewall. I can see why some people like it.

I enabled it once for a few days and it makes it sound like something is wrong with the vehicle so I quickly disabled it. Not sure why BMW wasted money engineering it in the first place, I don't like it but someone must have thought it was a good idea.
