Window problems, it umm fell

Yesterday when I was driving home I took a turn quickly and heard something small fall next to my shoulder. I couldn't find whatever it was so I just kind of forgot about it. Today I went to roll down my window and it went clunk and made some more nasty noises and the window fell down inside the door.

I did some searching and couldn't find anything similar. Any idea what this could be before I take the door apart?

Also while I have access to the inside of the door is there anything I can do to make it sound better when it closes?

Sounds like the window regulator - common point of failure on BMW's in general, I believe (my previous car, X5, ate up 3 during the 3 years of ownership). Not a hard DIY, and as far as sound deadening goes, I've heard of people lining the inside of the door with Dynamat or equivalent.

+1.

Ron Stygar on Bimmerfest did a post on installing the sound deadening IIRC

Does this work as a general guide to fixing it or are there some extra points I should be aware of once I get the door panel off?

So I got the door panel off today and what I heard fall was the bolt that holds the window on the rear slider. Once the back part fell off, the window slid off the front slider. Anyone know the trick to getting the window back on? Once I get the front of the window in place I can't line up the hole for the bolt.

edit, also the bolt that holds the window in place, does anything go on the back of it, does it have a torque rating? I'd hate if I screwed it to tight and broke the glass.
