Trunk Panel Question?

Picked up the Z4 M on Saturday. Trying to still figure out how everything works since I still do not have the manuals.

There are 2 knobs, one on either side, attached to a plastic horizontal panel towards the top and rear of the trunk, that can be adjusted up or down. Function?

This is an adjustable shelf on top of which the soft top is stowed.
Shelf in up position - slightly more trunk room, but top will not be able to be stowed.
Shelf in down position - slightly less trunk room, top will go down
