Accessing Kick Panel Speaker

I just found these pictures I took when I replaced my kick panel speakers and figured I would post them. The hardest/most frustrating part is trying to pry up the black plastic covers on the door sills. The passenger side came up/off fine. The driver's side cracked a little getting it off. All in all it took maybe 5 minutes to get to the speaker:

1. Remove door sill cover
2. Remove rubber door seal
3. Unscrew hold down screw under door sill cover
4. Remove plastic speaker cover.

So after removing the one screw under the sill piece, the plastic cover just snaps off? How about the drivers side, anything special with the hood release handle?

You have to remove the screw on the hood release handle, then after removing the handle there is another screw underneath. Once those (and the screw down by the sill) are out, the panel is retained by the two clips and just pops out. You don't need to remove the rubber door seal.

I just took this apart on mine the other day. It made an annoying rattle on some songs and I found out the trunk release wire was rubbing against the speaker. Easy fix.

It was replaced as part of a full audio upgrade I did (I posted a write up last week or so). There are no drop-in replacements for the stock mid-bass just as of yet from any speaker mfgrs. Folks are waiting with baited breath for Bavarian Sound Works to make theirs available.

Check this out, a German company:

http://www.jehnert.de/produkte-doorb...tem?lang=en_us

This should be an exact replacement size wise, including basket shape, for our kick panel woofers:

http://www.jehnert.de/produkte-speak...0mm?lang=en_us

http://www.jehnert.de/produkte-doorb...akers/?popup=1

I think I read that the kick panel woofers are 2 ohm.............. can anyone confirm this?

I saw those panels from Jehnert when I was doing system planning (before I bought the car, of course) and my jaw hit the ground. Then I saw the price (not including drivers, I assumed) and my jaw shattered.

Those Jehnert speakers are 4 ohm. Did anyone conrirm if ours are 2 ohm? It would be great to have a drop-in replacement.

There is a US distributor for Jehnert. Here's the company's catalog from the distributor web site:

http://www.exquisitemarketinggroup.c...T_Cat_2011.pdf

These woofers are on page 7.

I agree on the drop in replacement. Hey elerner, look on the kick panel speakers you removed and see if it says 2 or 4 ohm ............... the mids were marked, so I am assuming the kicks should be as well. Thanks!

John, the kicks are 2 ohms. I just posted pics (bad ones) to a new thread since people always ask for the specs on the drivers.

Thanks Evan! That rules out the Jehnerts....... guess we'll have to put some heat on BSW to get the kicks developed

OP - do you know how deep they are (mounting depth)?

Also, I'm going to see if I can find any postings listing the power on that channel from the stock amp.

From the DSP training manual for BMW service techs:

Top-HiFi amplifier
With regard to its functionality, the Top-HiFi amplifier corresponds
to the previous DSP amplifier as already used in other
model series.
The special features on the E85 are the two high voltage output
stages (30 V) for the Carver woofers.
The Top-HiFi amplifier has 2 analogue inputs (left and right). In
addition, the Top-HiFi amplifier features a digital input for the CD
changer connection (coaxial cable). This arrangement achieves
a higher signal quality.

Front low-range speaker (woofer)
The woofer has a diameter of 160 mm and a paper cone. The
maximum load capacity is 50 W.
The woofers (low-range speakers) cover a frequency range from
50 Hz to 500 Hz.

Installation location
The front woofers (low-range speakers) are mounted at the
bottom in the A-pillars on the left and right.

Mid-range speaker
The mid-range speaker has a diameter of 100 mm and an
aluminium cone. The maximum load capacity is 50 W.
The mid-range speaker covers a frequency range from 100 Hz to
10,000 Hz. The front and rear mid-range speakers are identical.

Installation location
The front mid-range speakers are fitted in the doors.
The rear mid-range speakers are installed in the partition behind
the seats.

Top-HiFi audio system
The Top-HiFi audio system features a 10-channel analogue
amplifier with DSP technology as used in the current vehicles.
The Top-HiFi amplifier is controlled with a constant audio signal
via the two analogue output channels of the radio. In addition,
the Top-HiFi amplifier features a digital input for the CD changer.
The speakers are connected to the 10 output channels.
The Top-HiFi audio system has following output ratings:
- Medium-range and high-range speakers: 6x20 W
- Low-range speakers: 2x40 W
- Carver low-range speakers: 2x100 W
