Garage Ideas
Hey guys.
Haven't posted in a while, atleast not as much as I used to, but I've been lurking. Been busy with work. Anyways, just bought my first house! It has a 2 car garage. I'm loving it. About to epoxy the garage floor. Need some more ideas on how to setup the garage. Was hoping to get some pictures of everyone's garages to inspire me. I have looked around on the net for some ideas but I'm curious how the zpost group has their zcaves setup. Thanks! |

Great idea for a thread! Let's hope we get lots of good garage pictures.
Already told the honey that when we get a house I'm getting a lift in the garage, it's getting budgeted in

Congrats on the home ownership! Wish I could offer advice but I've never done such a thing before. My garage has not changed since the day I moved in - except for all of the crap that has accumulated inside of it for the past 4 years.
Check out this video of Jay Leno talking about garage floors - not a comedy skit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=bCQtzXch83k |

I'll probably be banned after this but the garage currently has a ping pong table and a bunch boxes, and the car is residing in the driveway. This will be my weekend project!

So this is in the bottom of our office building. Lots of lit covered areas for detail work.
I plan to do the floor in here. Possibly a lift as the ceiling is pretty high. Until I buy another house with a big garage, this will suffice.

Ill post pictures later but I have a workbench, sink, air compressor with retractable air hose reel, lots of hooks on the wall, Hi-Loft shelving, a TV, bunch of posters, SI Swimsuit Edition calendar, and working on getting it wired up for 210. Thinking about getting a drop extension cord reel to plug in and hang from the ceiling.

I do most of my work in an airplane hangar that my dad owns, it has an epoxy floor, huge workbench, router table, welding gear, bandsaw, giant air compressor (220v), a sink with a hose bib on it, a toolbox like this:
OH and a kitchen, bathroom, and living space. I only wish it were closer to where I live now. |

Here is mine. The M3 is deceased. My Z4MC now rests here. And of course the Z4MC has imola red interior to keep with the theme. One of the best things is to add a stainless steel sink to the garage. I tied into the water and drain of the washer. In the left rear corner is the air compressor and tank for the pneumatic tools. Above it is a 50 foot hose. Another must! I also went to Home Depot and bought their warehouse style lights. You can never have enough lighting when working on your baby! I think the stripe across the wall gives the garage character. You might consider something like that to liven up the garage. There is also a full sound system built in with speakers at all 4 corners. On the left are 3 benches lined up in a row. They also have their own lighting. You can also never have enough bench space.

Cabinets, lots of nice cabinets and drawers for organized storage as well as some pegboard.. I did some under cabinet lighting too. I also am fortunate enought to have an attic above my gararge so I put my air compressor up there to get it out of the way and then ran the lines through the celing to one of those retractable hose things, I had an electrician wire a circuit up there to a light switch on the wall down in the garage, whenever I need air I just flip the switch. I also ran an extension cord retractable thing up there so I have overhead power rather than having a cord drapped over the car, motorcyle or ATV I might be working on. I added two very high quality 4 bulb flourescent lights built into the ceiling, lights are key. I also have a fridge out there along with a Bose iPod dock and a small 24 inch LCD TV and cable TV. I built my house new so I had it insulated very good and had the builder add an insulated garagae door, all walls and ceiling are drywalled and painted, looks as good as any walls inside my house. I also have a ceiling fan which is great in the summer. On my list of garage projects this year is an epoxy floor, that I will be getting done by a pro and a gas furnace so I can live out there for these crummy Chicago winters. Garage is a mess right now with snow blower and ATVs in there otherwise I would take some photos.

I'd suggest running 110v and 220v to wherever you might need it.
I installed a ton of 110v outlets when I sheet rocked my garage and I'm glad I did. I also put 2 new 220v outlets in at the same time. One is unused, the other is in the corner with my 220 compressor. I also went with 4 banks of quad florescent lights. Nice and bright when working at night. Wire rack shelving. I have one good one, and bought a cheap plastic one for my detailing supplies. http://www.buyrack.com/index.cfm?are...rowse&CID=1445 Don't by the cheap air hose like I did. It kinks and gets twisted very easily. Drives me crazy when the big loops get caught on stuff in the garage. Post some pictures! |

I don't do much "work" in the garage other than change tires and minor puttering. The best upgrades I've made are adding lots of extra electical outlets on the walls and one in the ceiling.

My setup is similar to jumbosock's. Strongly recommend the Racedeck floor system. Can't beat the wall cabinets (for storage) the way his is designed. Lots of retailers now carry these, but don't overlook custom installations. Also, try to use the ceiling as much as possible, too (ligting, pull-down cords, hardtop lifts, etc.).

Ok, so I decided to post up a few pics even though my garage is an absolute mess right now. Sorry for the crappy photo quality and lighting, I took these last night. I just realized I didn't take a pic of the wall of the front right side in front of my Z4, there is a fridge and another bank of cabinets just like the left side.

I really like using magnet sticks to hold my tools versus storing them in shelves. It doesn't look at neat, but it makes it easy as hell to find everything

Here are some photos of mine. garagejounal.com was responsible for much of the inspiration. It's got re-purposed 1950's era kitchen cabinets for storage and they also serve as the base of the workbench. The floor is a 2 part epoxy floor applied by me. The far left bay has a 13'6" ceiling for the 4 post lift which is coming this spring. It's heated and air conditioned with an unfinished loft (but could be quickly transformed should my wife ever kick me out of the house). For me, it's a great place to hang.
