energy conservation mode,

I recently took my 2008 Z4 to a local non bmw mechanic for an oil change and a new battery. When I got it back the AC, defroster, and arable speed on the blower fan don't work. I took it back to him, and after 3 days, he tells me that the car is in "energy conservation mode," and he has put in a call to BMW for help.
Has anyone else run into this, and do you have any advise for getting everything to work again?
Thanks for the help. Love the car!

Pretty sure that's "transport mode".
Never happened to me, but I've seen a lot of talk about it.
Try a forum search.
3 days? Maybe you need a new mechanic.

Mine stays in the Energy Conservation Mode most of the time - with a Battery Tender connected to it!

You are most certainly dealing with Transport mode. Your car was improperly prepped and did not have the mode fully disabled allowing this to happen. I would call BMW NA and ask for them to authorize a dealer to reprogram the car free of charge as it should have been done from day 1..

Garage List
It certainly is transport mode. My battery had died during the winter and in the time it took me to replace the battery the car went into transport mode. The heater didn't work etc etc. I didn't need to bring it to bmw. An awesome Indy shop took it out of transport mode for me. Good luck

Thanks everyone for the help. Unfortunately I'm 225 miles form the nearest dealer, so I feel like I need to give the local guys a chance to see if they can do it. I'll make a call to another local shop tomorrow, and see if he knows how to do it. If not, then I will try the dealership that sold the car originally. I will try the "tack" that the car was not properly prepped, that makes sense to me.
Again… thanks everyone!

You should consider getting your own BMW scanner software. It is about $50 on eBay.

If your indy shop have Autologic, they can take it out of transport mode.

Well the other local shop couldn't help me, so I called one of the Dealerships in Minneapolis. The first appointment I could get was June 24th, (two weeks out), and he said it would take about an hour. The shop rate is $140/ hr, and a 450 mile round trip. I suggested that the car may not have been prepped properly and got no response from him.
Does the code reader on Ebay allow you to clear codes and reprogram the computer?

There are many available. Here is an example.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-USB-OBD-..._Tools&vxp=mtr

I purchased from the seller, but the package do not support ADS mode. The packaged was returned for refund.

PA Soft is easier to use. It have a nice UI but only runs on XP. PM me if you are interested in PA Soft. I have the cable and software.

Never go back to that shop again.. Transport mode is a pain in the ass. As suggested, get your own cord and software and DIY..

IMHO, everyone should have DIS and INPA.
Best $40 I ever spent.

Don't know, I've never been in transport mode either, but DIS can read and clear everything else, and I think I remember from another thread ...

My friend came by today with his 2007 Z4 E85 in transport mode & we can report success with the same setup I use for my E39.

We were both pressed for time so I'm afraid that I didn't take screen shots to capture a step by step log. I'll describe steps because there is another thread going with someone having trouble deleting transport mode & this may help.

First ran EasyDIS V44 & found that automatic vehicle recognition did not work. Manual vehicle ID would not offer his '07 model year as a selection. Then occurred to me that the car's build date was 07/07 & thought perhaps V44 was issued before this date.

Then ran another version of EasyDIS upgraded to V57. Automatic vehicle recognition worked. Quick test found several modules with faults. I used the right arrow (lower right corner of screen) and found transport mode listed as one of the problems.

I highlighted the transport mode error and clicked right arrow. Screen came up asking if I wanted to delete transport mode. DIS directed to used quick clear/delete to erase all other errors after deleting transport mode. Selected yes to delete transport mode. The delete process took about 1 minute.

Ignoring the other problem codes, I clicked left arrow (lower left corner of screen) twice I think, until the starting diagnostic screen that lists all modules along with the quick test and quick delete buttons appeared. Clicked on quick delete. Then exited EasyDIS when quick delete finished.

My friend checked that the systems disabled by transport mode now worked, especially A/C & yes they did. He took his car for a 10 minute spin to see if the other DTCs would reappear. We rescanned with V57 and only the left low beam light error reappeared which was fair enough since that light was inop. Something for another day.

For software
First you need INPA. INPA is a diagnostic program that is quite easy to install and get working. It's often included with a cable. However some people have reported finding viruses in those packages. Better to use the sites listed in the links for clean versions. INPA installation serves as a test that the car and computer are able to talk to one another.

Then you need to install DIS V57. DIS was the dealer software until roughly 2008 or so. Most people first install EasyDIS, a hacked version of DIS V44. They then run an upgrade package to move EasyDIS (V44) to V57. V44 won't recognize your 2007 car since it's issue date was pre-2007. EasyDIS and V57 both use communication modules installed with INPA, which is the reason for getting INPA working first.

This is excellent info. Can you cite any locations for a clean/virus free versions of EasyDis-v44, and the upgrade to DIS-v57?

All the eBay ones are v57.
Thanks, rsutoratosu, for confirming my suspicion that DIS would clear transport mode just like any other code.

rsutoratosu,

I just had a thought, do you think perhaps that you corrected the issue by removing the transport mode problem by deleting the error, however you have not changed the configuration (turned transport mode off). As such, if the battery is removed/goes dead again will the car once again go into transport mode?
