Question 1st gear *very* whiney - normal?

Are all Z4M transmissions very whiney in 1st? For example in a parking garage, 1st gear around 2k rpm, the transmission whine is so loud that it echoes through the garage and attracts some weird looks. The motor can't even be heard over the transmission whine. Is that all Z4Ms or just my car? Perhaps 1st gear was chipped by P.O.? Can anything be done to insulate or reduce the noise?

1st gear does not whine in my 2007 Z4MC.

I am not sure if I would call it a whine or a high pitch drone but my 08 ZM seems to do the same thing in 1st.

I don't notice a whine in our 07 ///M--engine is always louder. But it's really had to diagnose sounds by description. Do you have sound clip?

A user in this forum had whining issue. He first thought it was the transmission, because it really sounded like it was coming from there. Long story short, it turned out it wasn't from the transmission, it was the power steering pump. Is your steering heavier than usual? It may not be easy to tell this though...

I have a whine from I'm guessing the diff when in gear and coasting in almost all gears, it's a very slight whine though

My car sounds like a finely-tuned aircraft at 35,000ft at idle. LOVE IT

Drive another Z4M and compare. The "cure" is to make the engine louder

I've seen several threads about this (might be over on bimmerforums too), so a search will help.

I've got what I would call a 'rumble' between 1k and 2.5k RPM. It got worse after a recent belt replacement and a throttle actuator replacement. Still not sure what it is, and the dealer dismissed it as vanos noise (which I've never heard of occurring at that low of an RPM). Very annoying when slowly rolling around a parking lot. Going to try to find a good indie mechanic that'll take the time to figure it out.

Not that I can tell no. I'm trying to hook up with another local M owner to do a comparison. I'll let ya know what I find.
