-UPDATED-finally achieved "true" dual exhaust on my 2006 3.0I yayyyyy!!!!!!

was fianally able to pull her out today as it was nice and warm!!!!

sound clips will follow soon!!!

well it’s been a long winter, but I’m happy to say its winding down and my winter project is almost done.

I’m going to post just a few pics of the project, the first project for the Z was the 3 stage manifold swap as I posted earlier and now it was to achieve a true dual exhaust on my car much like the M Z's as I love the look of duals and really thought it be a fun challenge as not many have really done a true cat back dual exhaust on a non M Z4.

I’ve got everything M from the cats back, well minus the diff and suspension but as far as hardware and M exhaust parts I’m at about the price of a aftermarket M exhaust setup so as far as costs go I’m not out of the price range as some would have thought.....actually pretty cost effective considering its all used stock stuff with new parts from the dealer that matches tishers prices.

Updated 3/12/11

ok guys i got it all up and done now I just need to bolt up the wheels and get the bumper painted and the battery re-installed

so what do you guys think!

Here is a shot of the trunk pan, all the bolts show where certain brakets needed to be in order to hold fuel emission hoses and active carbon fuel emission canister as well as muffler brakets. floor cover was test fitted and sits perfect and no need to modify. all bolt holes where treated with por15 to stop any rust from starting from drilling through the metal, I also plan to cover the trunk pan with dynamat to lower any sound verberation if any.

X-pipe connected to stock setup.

ok here is a shot of the rear of the car.

now painted!!!!!!!

here is a shot from under the vehicle, all parts are accounted for and installed properly...no shortcuts used.

left side exhasut mounted.

right side exhasut mounted.

battery cable re-routed.

battery tray location has been moved to stock ///M location and RIV nuts installed to achive a strong and clean mounting surface to sheet metal.

now finished and fully trimed trunk!

well laidies and gents it can be done!!!!

when u say everything from cats back, u mean 2ndary cats, not the headers right? too bad you didn't dyno prior to the conversion, i'd be curious to see how this stacks up against stock seeing how everything we've read says the n52 was factory optimized.

thanks guys im really siked, kinda playing on uncharted ground, as ive seen a very few older 3.0I that have done the dual exhaust but not the n52 based Z4's

yea the battery was a bit tricky i had to make my own part using delrin and rubber to make a grommit that will hold the main starter wire and keep it from ever touching the sheet metal in the trunk while keeping the water out. its very OEM looking which was my main goal.

the end of my pipes that you see cut off i made an adapter for the two parts that use the 3 bolt flange of the x-pipe so its a direct bolt on exhaust.

so technically i can buy any M exhaust and use it on my car and it be a direct bolt on from the beginning of the x-pipe back. i still have the origanal headers on the car so its still got the pre cats and cats to deal with but i feel thats where most hp loss or back pressure is made.

the stock I muffler is about the size of two M mufflers so who knows how it will affect the car. yea i wish i had a dyno but they really dont have them around where i am located.

I am doing this in preperation for my trip to AA to have a stock tune done with the mods ive done so far so the 3 stage manifold and the dual M exhaust so im excited to try a base run and see where we are, I know kirkpart2 is planning to meet me their with his I as well so we will have a guess on what is made or lost with a dual exhaust, i know its not on the same car but i imagine the numbers wont be that differnt.

anywho stay tuned!

I just posted a new pic of the rerouted fuel emissions to the correct M placement this made the room available for the other muffler, you euro guys don’t have to deal with this, as this makes the whole process daunting to us north American guys!

also note that the on our non M cars we have proper attachment points already in the sheet metal to hang the heat shields! BIG PLUS no locating needed.

like I said earlier its about 90% plug and play.

there’s already the attachment points for both the M mufflers as well on the outer edges of the car the only part you need to fabricate up is the inner mounting blocks!

then bolt them up and your good to go!

Photos showing the repositioning of the emissions components would be appreciated if you can. Following thread with great interest.
