Starting issues

Car has a weird starting issue. its intermittent and doesn't happen all the time.

so turn the key and it would turn over and over but will not fire. stop and immediately try again and it would fire up.

it doesn't always do this sometimes it starts ok, sometimes it feels like it takes one too many turn-overs.

now it is dead as a dodo nothing at all, the power is coming on ok radio/lights/wipers etc. all the dash is lighting as normal. but nothing not even a click from the starter. you can even hear the fuel pump priming

Battery is relatively new (<12 months) and is showing 12.5V so ok terminals have no corrosion or are loose

do these cars have a starter relay or an ignition relay?

Likely the ignition switch. Google Z4 ignition switch issues.

Part is inexpensive and an easy DIY.

Let's do this in stages. Try taping the starter with the side of a wrench 3/4 times and then attempt to start the car. If nothing, repeat the taping and starting the car. If nothing, try a new ignition switch. If nothing after the new ignition switch, it might be the starter. It can be taken off and tested.

Note: if the car starts after the taping the starter, it's the starter.
