New 4D carbon fiber vinyl?

I was looking for some info on the 3M 1080 carbon fiber film and came across this newest 4D carbon fiber vinyl film (not made by 3M). It's said to look and reflect like real wet carbon fiber and doesn't have that "dry" look with the 3M di-noc or 1080.

Does anyone have any experience with it? I have no problem admitting that I couldn't care less about the weight loss from real CF, and if this 4D CF film looks decent in person, I just might wrap my roof with this.

I think it looks pretty good for a wrap. It would probably look great on a Z4 coupe.

Sorry, does not look good (or even close to real) to me. I think just gloss black for the roof would be miles better than this. I dont care too much about "poser" mods but, if you are REALLY doing it just for the cosmetic look, why would you not just want gloss black on the roof?

Real CF looks great up close, fake CF looks tacky up close, from 10 feet away CF or gloss black roof has the same look. So I would do gloss black on the roof before I did this stuff.

I just ordered some, I have the aluminium option, I don't like it, its too bright but I have just ordered graphite front grills so I might paint them graphite instead along with the rear badge and rear door opening badge I have a thing about chrome.

Did you get the 4D chrome carbon fiber? How's the surface texture?

I talked to R-design & Vvivid Viynl, the manufacturer of the 4D film based in Montreal, Canada. The photos I posted in the orignal post were simply the film and no clear-coat on top of the film, but Vvivid said the film can be clear-coated as well to look even more like wet carbon fiber. 3D (like the 3M 1080) films will turn into one black piece and lose the CF weaves if clear-coated and look at crap. 3M films shine, too, but show no reflections. 4D films are said to show reflections.

If there was a real CF roof in good quality available in the market, I'd have bought one already. I have no idea if this 4D CF film is gonna look good in person. For all I know it may still look like crap, too. But I'll bite and order some and see how it works out.

It looks too "loud". I think the grain in real CF is more subtle.
It's yelling "LOOK AT ME. I'M CARBON FIBER!!".

Where did you order from? I think it looks very good for wrap.

I prefer the 2x2 weave, but please post pics from your sample.

I think once you clearcoat it, it will become permanent, or nearly impossible to remove, wont it?

I'll post photos once I get the samples.

But the more research I've done on this 4D film, the more I'm convinced that it won't look real or good. I did find something else that looks almost real though. Not cheap.

Non enthusiasts don't know what carbon fiber is. Never heard of it.
They'll figure you covered your top with corduroy.

If this thing doesn't look good in person, it won't get anywhere near my Z4MC. Like I said, if someone makes a real CF roof, I'd have bought one yesterday. I couldn't care less about saving money and going cheap with a film. But no one makes a real CF for the E86. To me, the 4D CF film is no different than people putting the 3M di-noc/1080 or putting black gloss films on their roofs (actually painting the roof black is a different story; black vinyl'd roof looks cheap and ghetto in person).

I'm not gonna make my Z4MC look ghetto. I only brought up this 4D CF film in the first place 'cos I knew nothing about it and it claims to be this brand new technology that looks exactly like real carbon fiber. IF it indeed looked like real CF, sure why not. But obviously, this claim seems over-stretched. Not really a big deal. I'll go back to crossing my fingers and hoping one of these days a real CF roof for the E86 will be produced.

Already signed up. But I've just been told that CA automotive will once again produce real CF roofs for the E86 since a lot of people on the other Z4 forum have been begging them to do a group-buy, and that they're in the stage of deciding the pricings.
