To E89 or not E89

Well came across a good deal on an e89 and wanted to ask you guys what you thought.

As some of you know i have an E85 and was wondering if I should upgrade to an e89.

But I find things that I like and dislike about it, Big improvement on interior quality but I feel the exterior has lost something that the e85 has .... Maybe I'm just looking for a new project I don't know, I love my car and am struggling with the choice.

Any reasons to leave or stay with the E85 would be fantastic to hear or should I move to the E89?

Appreciate the feedback.

This is obviously personal choice, but I love the E85. Yeah, the E89 is more modern and fleshed out, but I've always thought of the E85 as the closest to a "classic sportscar/roadster" as has been produced in recent history. I think the proportions are better.

It's a good car and if it stirs you, you should do it, but for me I will stick with what I have.

Yea I know it's a personal choice but its good to hear others thoughts.... I also agree as the Z4 was the first of its kind to use the flame styling that shifted automotive design as we know it today. It was revolutionary for its time... probably why so many hated it. . It also has one of the most elegant hood lines in recent auto design where it wraps from hood to door very gracefully and I feel the new one is not as strong in side profile as the E85.

Exactly. I was shopping for one until I realized it wasn't a feature.

Look the looks of the E89 though, beautiful car.

Which lets you know they were doing something right.

I have the 2.5 and what sold me on it over other more powerful and equipped models is that it was stripped down and basic. Which was exactly what I was looking for. Less is more.

I know that isn't for everyone and fully understand why someone would want the si or M. I've given thought to "upgrading" but always come back to why I got it in the first place. There's very little that can go wrong with it and when I'm int it, it's all about driving and very little about the bells and whistles. So, by that logic, it further pushes me away from the E89.

e89 is a great car. looks beautiful. i was faced with the same decision before i bought my e86 m coupe. i drove the e89 first and the m coupe second. i liked the drive more in the e86. much more raw/fun. the m badge also drew me to it as well, lol

E89 looks nice but where does the trunk go when you put the top down? Depends on if you want to carry picnic basket, ice chest and/or overnight bag on your summer/top down roadtrips.

I love the interior of the E89, but the exterior leaves something to be desired. I do like the hard top convertible idea over the fabric soft top, especially for those of us who don't have a nice safe garage to hide from the elements, but I think the execution on the body fell short of the E85/6. I just love the hard, sharp lines on our cars over the rounded E89. As for the transmission, I've seen several times where people who are die hard manual only fans really enjoy the gearbox they put in the E89.

But like Dubsesd, I'm a sucker for the ///M.

I used to sweat the e89. But then I thought about why I loved the e85 - classic roadster styling. Small car. Rag top. Fun to drive.

I used to have a 2008 Z4MR, then leased a 2011 Z4 35is (still have it), but just bought a 2007 Z4MC. Here's my take: E85/86 M cars feel raw and exciting to me--classic sports car. The E89 is more refined, easier to drive around town (especially a 35is or a 35i with a JB4), more comfortable, and generates a lot of compliments, but at the end of the day, I missed that connection to the driving experience that the Z4M gave me. Maybe it's because of the DCT, but I think it's more than that. Although I will say, DCT has grown on me, and my next car will likely have it... For now, my E89 sits in the garage while I have fun with my E86

For 2009, the SDrive 35i was known to be subject to frequent and repeated failure of the high pressure fuel pump, or HPFP as you will see them called. If you are interested on one of those, be sure that it has been properly fixed. It's my understanding that the issue was fixed on subsequent cars. As the SDrive 30i uses a normally aspirated N52, same as the 3.0 SI, it is not turbo charged, does not use HPFPs and is not subject to that worry.

As to the looks of the E89, I think it looks good, although not quite as aggressive as an E85. It could hardly be called meek in appearance. The interior is much improved in my view, much more upscale then the E85 and properly befitting a BMW. It's one of my beefs with the E85 - the interior of my 2009 Honda Accord looks more expensive. The folding hard top is very cool but it does eat into trunk space with the top down. You will find the ride softer than your E85.

Best advice though Is to drive one and see if you like it better!

these are the lines you will miss on the e85/6. look at those fenders extending into the doors and the rear quarters!!! makes my 3 series look boring lol

that's one beautiful pic dub... looks like something out of a bmw brochure

And -c-, weren't you the guy that converted your i to the si, so that it's now even faster than the stock si ? (with the higher final drive ratio in the i vs the si)? Have you gotten bored with that extra power lol?

What's the reason for wanting the change? Do you just find something lacking in the 85 that the 89 can deliver? Or is it just time for a change?

Either way, you'll have a beautiful and unique car. Have fun with the decision!

I owned a 2003 Z4 3.0 6speed sport package. Then dabbled with a Corvette convertible A6, and am now the happy owner of a 09 Z4 3.0 6speed. I could not be happier with the E89. I feel that it has all of the classic sports car charm that I enjoyed with the 03 Z and sorely missed with the Vette, but the refinements of the 09 Z just make it a more enjoyable vehicle. I think the PRHT is splendid, and a huge improvement over soft tops. I also feel that the interior is improved as are the tech features, such as Bluetooth, XM, and digital engine data.

I buy my fun cars used, and at 9,000 miles, with remaining factory warranty and maintenance in Sapphire Black Metallic exterior with Coral Red Leather/wood interior, it was an easy choice.

You have a great dilemma on your hands, either way you go, you can't screw up.

thanks everyone for your feedback!

I decided to keep my car, I was literally a signature away from actually buying a silver coupe instead of the E89 and looked at my car long and hard and decided id like to keep it, buying the coupe id have to start over and the E89 did not have all I wanted and if im going to spend the cash I want it perfect.

in the end I could not give my baby away, had my wife drive the car around in the parking lot and seeing the car in motion reminded me why I love it so much.

Didn't you do some crazy 3.0 to 3.0SI conversion? or was it a different car?

Saved from the dark side, you are! Strong with the Force, the E85 is!

I recently had a ride in a E89. Thought it was terrible and it rode like a sedan.

Was even less impressed than I was before.
