Feeler: ESS VT2-500 Supercharged 2007 Z4 M Coupe
Hey all, I've gone to the dark side: a new 2012 Porsche 911 Turbo S sits in my garage beside the Z4MC. The most sensible thing to do is to sell the M even though I'm pretty sentimentally attached to it, but the deciding factor will be market interest and the price it can fetch. The car is nicely modded as some on the forum already know. I can't go into complete detail here, but the vitals are: - Less than 44k miles; only 4k on the supercharger kit itself. S/C oil has been changed, and I change the engine oil and filter more often than the BMW requirement. - ESS VT2-500 Supercharger Kit--"stage 2", including large and extremely effective intercooler and new oil cooler. Rated 500HP. Cost over $12,000 to have professionally installed. - High-tech digital gauge system integrated behind the rear-view mirror glass. Invisible with the car off, seen as an overlay on the image in the mirror when the car is running. Air/Fuel ratio and Boost gauges are present on the left and right, as is a GPS-assisted Radar/Laser/Red Light Camera detector. Over $3,500 to purchase and install. I am going to miss this on the Turbo S! This is a really unique feature, but I don't have photos right now (check out radar-mirror.com). Auto-dimming retained. - Extended maintenance warranty AND Certified Pre-Owned warranty extending through March 2013. Verified coverage still applies with S/C kit installed, except engine warranty. They will do the full Inspection II including valve adjustments for free. Next full set of brakes + rotors included; oil changes too. - BMW OEM Euro headers. improves performance beyond the standard kit, and produces a stunning exhaust note. Carefully installed personally (an entire day's work). Over $1,000 in parts. - Full set of expanded-width Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires with plenty of tread left. 245 front, 265 rear. - Brand new BMW OEM windshield with less than 2k miles on it (original cracked due to a falling acorn--not kidding!). - Tinted windows (20-30% sides, 50% rear) - Miscellaneous replacements (e.g. got the most out of the original warranty): new shift knob, various interior trim replaced when buying the car CPO, multivex mirrors included (not yet installed). There are a few isolated cosmetic damages; the previous owner scuffed the front right of the bumper on a curb, but it is now better-protected by metal RPi skid plates I installed on the bottom "fangs" of the bumper. The interior is in great condition overall, especially the leather throughout, except for some scratches on the driver's side door sill. I clean and condition the leather myself regularly, and keep the car clean overall. As of now I'm in Southern California (San Diego County), but moving back to Northern California around February 20th (Silicon Valley). For those who know this car but just want to see the Turbo S, here's a gallery. These are probably the best post-S/C kit photos I have at the moment, but bear in mind the car had just been driven from NorCal to SoCal (dirty wheels). The intercooler is an awesome visual addition! Yeah...celebration of a new job at Facebook, actually. While it's tough to beat a new car (esp. one near 200k w/ tax!), there are still a number of things I prefer about the M. The sound of the S54 is far better, and while it may sound silly to mention, the feel of the turn signal stalk is also a lot better. So are the HVAC controls--BMW has much better developed tactile feel. I also have to say that the steering wheel in the M remains the best I've ever felt, though the Turbo S is the runner-up (also a pretty hefty rim).
The performance of the Turbo S is pretty extreme, and of course very fun, but a less engaging drive. It's so fast that it is easy to /accidentally/ blow past any semblance of a speed limit with a couple second acceleration demo for a buddy. And I haven't even been playing with Sport or Sport Plus mode. Nonetheless the VT2-500 M is lighter and especially competitive from a roll where traction is not as big of an issue. Additionally, my impression remains that the Z4M community is much tighter-knit than the 911 guys, and that's something I'd really miss if the car goes. |

Thanks for the well-wishes, all! It's entirely possible I will keep the M if it turns out that the "influx" of M's coming off lease (though a small number) have enough of an impact on the market price that it's not worth selling. I have realized switching between each car just how different they really feel. While the sheer torque kick of the Turbo S is simply stunning, the throttle response of the supercharged S54 is in a totally different and superior class. Unlike comparing the Turbo S to most cars, it's far from disappointing to drive the M again since it has so many unique benefits.
I searched around the 'net and literally could not find a single supercharged M Coupe to compare price with, so I'm not sure where to set my asking price. I've put at least $20k into it in ways that are materially useful to the new buyer (S/C + headers, gauges + radar, extended maint + CPO, LoJack Early Warning, BSW stereo, camber plates + tires), and combined with it being a "loaded" configuration (navigation / DSP, heated seats), I'm expecting about 50% of what I put into it above a totally stock car. Coming down to numbers, I'll probably keep it if I can't get at least $40k. Thus the feeler question. My Craigslist ad currently has it at $42k. Input is appreciated on this since there really is no directly similar market comparison. I'll edit the original post when I get a chance with some of the other details about the car as soon as I get a chance, and some newer photos of the VT2-500 kit / digital gauges. |

+1 to bdn3d's comments. I can understand selling it, but heck, if the new 911 Turbo doesn't make it seem shabby, and well, it even has some pluses, I'd keep it. Obviously your choice, and the 911 Turbo is a hell of a car. It's cool either way.
BTW, the comparo you've made between the 2 underscores what Beedub has been saying for some time: S/C'ing a Z4M put the car into pretty rare territory. 42K seems very reasonable, maybe even a bit low, for all the other customization and pluses that have gone into the car outside of the kit itself. |
