I had this done in 2010 and it's been nice and quiet since.

I'm guessing at least two hours since I believe they drop the heat shield, exhaust, and drive shaft to complete the work on the input shaft.

Picked up the car today and it's as quiet as could be.

The clunk, or "creaking", was coming from the input flange of the differential. Following the SIB they removed flange, applied grease (CASTROL OPTITEMP HT) per SIB. Parts replaced, Input Shaft Seal and Securing Plate.

Will see how she holds up.
what numbers in the illustration you replaced?
grease only in the flange area?

Is this the same as the "M" clunk? Or is this something different?

e90sexion,

Yes this is something you could have an indie shop perform, or if you have access to a lift even a DIY. Mine was under warranty at the time so I took it to the dealer.

They removed the flange and greased as per the SIB with BMW's Optitemp HT1LF grease, and replaced the rear differential input shaft seal (Number 9 on the parts list).

Hope this helps.

abashoe and AmmarYasirA,

I'm not sure if it is, when I first posted some thought it might be similar. I could hear the clunk letting off the clutch while taking off in lower gears and at times slowly approaching a stop sign or stop light when the clutch was depressed. Not sure if this is even an issue with the M-differential.

Our clunk with the M cars are related to the Dual Mass Flywheel.

WHS

clunk is normal, we have a "heavy duty clutch" as BMW calls it. You just have to double clutch a bit at low speeds. Ive had it since day one, we all have if you don't give it a little gas. Totally normal, worry more about the 2nd gear grind, my synchro is now shot and im looking at ALOT for a rebuild.
