Transmission fluid options
Im sure theres a thread about this but i couldnt find it. I found that amsoil was an option for our cars but it wasnt on their website.
Amsoil 5w30 Manual Syncromesh Amsoil 75w90 MTF these will work in our transmissions? Amsoil is the best out there hands down but I wasn't aware they made anything for our cars. Has anybody ever tried either of them? |

Royal purple is the way to go, helps our notchy gear boxes. Its what everyone recommends. People (including myself) have also tried RedLine MTL/MT-30 and found it unsatisfactory in our cars.
Technically BMW recommends D4 ATF, but I can't recall anyone ever reporting using it. I'm thinking about trying RedLine D4 next time around. |

I used royal purple. Wasnt a fan. Ive used amsoil in other cars with troublesome transmissions and it was a world of difference. Will those products listed work in our cars? Viscosity levels and what not?

I'm running Redline D4-ATF. This is Redline's recommendation. Can't address shift feel because I have SMG and use car mostly on track but it's been fine for about 5000 track miles and 2500 street miles.

my question is tho, will those amsoil products work in our transmissions? I want to use the synchromesh fluid they offer but I don't want to fry my transmission in the process

I have been using RP SynchroMax since Aug of 2010 with no issue in the Coupe'.
25+ track events and for the most part, a daily driver... To my maintenance mind, with 30K on the fluid, it is time to change it. I have been an Amsoil user for the last 20 years but nothing in the Amsoil line stands out as being better in this application. |

I changed to Amsoil 75w90 MTF April last year. No problem what so ever. I put about 7k miles since. I noticed the transmission is quieter and smoother especially with clutch out in neutral. Z3 have loyal folloing.

thanks for the info, do you still tend to grind 2nd with that fluid? im guessing not. I had a civic si years ago that had a 3rd gear grind problem, I swapped out for the synchromesh fluid and I never had it again, it was like butter. do you think the synchromesh fluid will be ok in our transmissions?

I still get it when I drive carelessly. What I noticed is the grinding is due to not fully in gear when clutch was released. This is caused by slight resistance going to 2nd. I've learn to pause a bit when I feel slight resistance. This is my opinion.
I tried Redline a few years ago. It was smooth for about 15k and started to feel more effort needed to shift. Overall, I am happy with Amsoil so far. |

Thanks for the insight, im going to a local indie shop tomorow to find out what the trans rebuild is going to run me. Ill ask him what he thinks of the synchromesh stuff. I really think itll help with the grind. If you look at civic si forums. Youll read they have the exact same problem in third as we do in 2nd. When i swapped to the amsoil stuff, it never happend again.

I use a 50/50 blend of Red Line MTL and MT90 in my MC transmission. My car sees a lot of driving school track time so I want something a little more viscous than D4 or MTL.

I thought you can only purchase a reman transmission from BMW. Have you try looking for a used one? There must be some in wrecking yard.
