Quick Diagnostics via iPhone

My goal is to be able to quickly monitor battery/charging voltage (to catch an alternator on its way out). Using an iPhone that's always in my pocket is the easiest. If I have to get my laptop from in the house...well that's not as easy.

iPhone connectivity via bluetooth to ELM 327 adapters doesn't work and it sounds like connectivity via wifi to an ELM 327 adaptor may not permit voltage monitoring. I'm trying to keep this low cost so the BMWhat and their wifi adapter combo is out of scope.

The OBDFusion iPhone app looks like a possibility. What about using my D CAN cable connected to the iPhone via a female USB to male 30pin adapter (IPhone 4S)?

I'm open to all suggestions and any hare-brained schemes that are working for others.

Voltage was allegedly not available with my setup using a Kiwi WiFi and DashCommand.
But I found it at "VEHICLE.VOLTAGE".
I think it's just reading the voltage on the OBDII connector, but that's good enough.

What am I missing? Why go through all the complicated methods just for a simple voltage reading? Just get a voltmeter (http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&key...l_2mibuww7b8_p) - simple and cheap!

Voltmeter looks kinda funny mounted on a vent clip.
Ipod is a cleaner look.
