hmm dont the aftermarket intakes + the scoops actually downgrade the power of the car? I can bet itll sound sweet tho! plus i love how with the scoops u can see red through the kidney grills but im just worried about power loss (tho im sure it isnt much)..... congrats on the purchase tho!
gonna post some updated pics of my car soon...hopefully i'll have them up by the weekend

The consensus right now says you would get heat soak with the two as the box is not sealed from the rest of the engine, decreasing power. I believe this should only happen if you are driving around the city, if you are on open roads/highway, there should be more then enough air (especially with the scoop) to keep the intake temps down.

yeah, i was contemplating the intakes as well, but read a few guys complain about loss of power... but the sound is amazing!
Quo, gotta hear that in person when you get it installed... I might go that route too I wonder if we really need the rpi scoop in the front? what if we just take off the oem infront of the grill? would that make it too dirty for the intake?

Elroy at RPI said there is a definite power loss with the Gruppe M and Rpi combo. This was confirmed with many dyno runs.(It was a forum members car not sure who though) I was looking about an open intake too but gave him a call first.Cant speak for AFE but I'm sure there will be loss there too. When I say loss I'm not talking more than 4-5 HP. But that is enough to keep me with the stock box and RPI scoop. But I will say that the awesome intake sound MIGHT be worth a small loss. Too each there own

I read about one test RPI did with a 5 series (can't remember if it was an M5 or not) that was anything but fair and scientific. They ran the car repeatedly on the dyno until the inlet air temp was around 140 deg and *surprise* with IAT that high there was a loss of power. There have been lots of discussions on the various boards about whether or not the intakes lose power. I can tell you from personal experience, if it does lose power it is not a noticeable amount and you'd need a dyno to verify (1-2 hp MAYBE). From an engineering standpoint, the aFe intake is much less restrictive. Can the stock electronics adapt to the increased airflow? Who knows.
What I can tell you is the sound is amazing, and it significantly enhances the driving experience. The car sounds mean when you get on it, and is not much louder than stock at part throttle. It's only loud when you want it to be, unlike aftermarket exhausts. |
