Vote Now! May 2013 Picture of the Month

Not quite as many as past months, but it's also a holiday weekend. There are, as usual, some really good shots in here! But let's see if we can get more for June.

POTM had some requirement changes based on input from POTM participants. The objective of the changes were to improve the picture quality (larger size, decrease compression issues) and ensure a level playing field (all picture the same size and format):
Picture dimensions have been revised to 1024x768 (filesize of up to 900kb using JPG)
JPG format (not JPEG) only as the Forum does not support large filesize for JPEG, which reduces quality
I think the new approach is yielding better quality within the constraints of the forum's filesize limits. Anyway, without further delay, here are this month's entries.

I always thought this was for Z4M's, not non-M Z4s? lol I was about to say choice one is the only M, therefore there is your winner. lol

But seriously all look good. I am still pissed BMW didn't come out with an E89 M. I would have been all over it, but since they didn't, not worth owning for me.

E85/86 Z4s, Z4Ms, and E89s are welcome to participate. We added the E89s to the mix a few months back, before that it was E85/86 only.

Check out some of the prior month's POTMs. There are 12+ submissions in some in Feb, Mar, Apr and some unbelievably good photos. Like calendar worthy and better shots!

Roger, will do. Thanks for the info. I do miss the Z4MC platform. Solid car... Still looks sweet!

Clarification on the rules - I thought we were going to have a maximum edge size, not a single resolution? 1024x768 is such a terrible aspect ratio for photography, IMO (and I would imagine that others agree)... it's much too square. Can we make the rules so that the maximum edge size is 1024px or something? So for example, people can submit a 1024x1024 image, a 1024x500, 500x1024, etc... as long as the longest edge is 1024px?

For example, if someone shoots a nice photo, imaged/framed perfectly in a 35mm film aspect ratio (3:2). Resized so that the longest edge is 1024px would result in an image that is 1024x683, which would not be allowed per the current rules. So in order to change it to 1024x768, the image would have to be cropped at the sides to make it more square, which can change the overall presentation/feel of the photo.

Here's an image that was shot on an DSLR in 3:2 aspect ratio (35mm film size), resized so that it's smaller but still the same native aspect ratio:

Here's the same image that was cropped and resized in order to follow the same aspect ratio as 1024x768:

As you can see, 1024x768 aspect ratio makes the photo too square and looks less like a traditional photo. This is just my inner photographer talking. If I'm the only one that wants to be able to submit in a native photography sized aspect ratio then no big deal, I just imagine that others might want to submit their stuff with the same framing/aspect ratio as shot, instead of having to crop off the sides to get to a weird non-photography size.

My understanding was that it is a max edge size, with a max width of 1024 and a max height of 768.

I think that the board's file size limits may come more into play if 1024 was used for both dimensions (1024x768 tested "safely", but near the ceiling).

I know that I've submitted shots in the past that we're a little short (i.e. 1024x 650)lined up with all the others, but it was a choice that I was making for what I thought was better framing.

That makes sense. I'm not trying to make it overly complicated, I just want to make sure that when I submit something I'm both following the rules and not cropping/changing the framing unnecessarily.
