Transmission fluid; MTF-LT2 or LT3?

I thought I've read that the MTF-LT2 is for M cars, while LT3 is for newer non-M BMW's. People on M3forum swear by the E46M needing the LT2.

I called a few dealers today to get a price quote on the LT2; none of them has it in stock. 1 dealer claimed that LT3 has superseded LT2. I checked realoem.com and sure enough it's saying the same thing.

Is there any official BMW service bulletin that says the LT3 is now the official fluid for the Z4M?

Why not just run up to AutoZone or Pep Boys and grab some Royal Purple Synchromax?

It really came down to personal preferences. I've read on a few bimmer forums that the Royal Purple Synchromax doesn't protect the the transmission as much and degrades at a faster rate compared to OE fluids. This may or may not be true and it seems like most people don't have issues with it. Personally I'm fine with the OE fluids.

Ended up finding some LT2 at a local dealer. The part# didn't show up as in-stock in their system. But it turned out the guy that works at the parts counter is an old friend and he found some left-over LT2 at the service shop (about 2.5 liters left in the big 5 liter container) and he just gave it to me for free.

So, what is the latest on what Transmission fluid to use for the Z4M, LT-2 or LT-3?
I just changed mine and used LT-3, recommended by Turner.

Well from what I know the LT-2 was the replacement for the original LT fluid. I wonder if the LT-3 is because of the shift from Castrol providing BMW its fluids to Shell. Just like how they are doing with the motor oils.
