My questions is simple.

With software, does the second O2 get shut off completely or does it show as ready and will thus pass emissions?

Either one, and it depends on your car.

There were no map files for my 2003 Z4 (which apparently has slightly different hardware than the 2004+ models, including some OBD1 era parts), so my tuner had to make them from scratch. Taking the time to make the O2's read "ready" would have been at an extra cost, since they weren't available either.

Additionally, emissions places are getting smarter. A reset is becoming more common, where the emissions tester will reset the OBD2 and see if O2's now show ready / not ready... sometimes as part of the sequence, or sometimes by pulling the battery. If they perform a reset, and your O2's still show ready, you fail.

I've decided to try cat sims, which are different from O2 sims. Install is taking longer than expected, but I'm going to work on them tonight. I'm scheduled to have bungs welded in tomorrow morning. I'll report back.

Another point - some companies won't tune competitor kits. Ask ESS for a tune.
