Who Has and What is the OEM USB Port for?

Was looking on realoem for some stuff and I randomly found this, part number 3 in the diagram:

http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?...34&hg=61&fg=35

Which cars came with it and what purpose does it serve?

If somebody got a USB port working that would be awesome! I know other manufactures have the USB ports to connect an iPod (with cable) or to play music files off a thumb drive. I'd be happy with either. My 07 has an headphone AUX in that works great with my iPod's headphone jack, but that's it.

I was using the aux input in my 07 for a while but it craps out every few months. Got it replaced once under warranty (connection was loose) but it's starting to get staticy again. Just bought an Intravee II, totally worth it... you should look into it!

I think some of the E60 cars that were produced around the time the Z4 was winding down had that as an option for iDrive. It looks like only number 2 in the picture is relevant to the Z4. The radio in the Z4, nav or not, wont make use of anything over USB.

The aux socket looks like a nice option for those that don't have an 07/08 to add a more OEM look. I tried to find it when I was adding aux to mine, looks much nicer then replacing the ash/coin tray. Just need the panel under the A/C controls and the cable to go along with it.

edit: just to note, I have had no issues with the AUX jack I installed in my car. With an line out dock adapter for my iPod touch it sounds great!

I know in the MINI cooper, it has the USB and AUX setup similar to the illustration on RealOEM, to connect either an iPhone or iPod. It works very well. The cable is basically Y shape. The one port end goes to the iPod bottom connector, the two port end goes in the USB and AUX in the car.
