That's the whole point - read and make your own decision!

Any lead-acid battery that is not completely sealed (i.e. has a vent tube or caps of any form) will out-gas hydrogen. If it has been stressed, it will produce enough hydrogen that could trigger a small explosion in a confined space when a spark is introduced. Using the correct procedure for connecting cables to the battery will eliminate that (even though small) risk completely and costs nothing.

BTW, our Z4M's use a wet AGM technology that is halfway between a conventional lead-acid battery and a gel cell in terms of electrolyte solidity.

would a gel cell make a better replacement?

Ignoring the light weight genre, are there any good non-OE replacements?

Clamp the Negative (-) terminal, follwed by the Positive (+). Shouldn't cause any issues

Then when you're done, reverse order: remove the Positive (+) first, followed by the Negative (-).

exactly, ground it first (-) , connect the power (+), then disconnect the power, and disconnect the ground last. safest way. just dont let the leads touch anything else while either battery is connected. i usually isolate the clamps/ terminals by wrapping a rag or something around it loosely

Probably not, as they are meant to be quite finicky in how they are charged, suitable only for deep cycling, as opposed to general purpose use:
