Rhino ramps
Has anyone ever used Rhino ramps to jack up their car for an oil change?
Rhino ramps or any other kinds? Thanks |

Rhino ramps **WILL** work, but it takes some work. I needed to drive up a series of 2x4's to get on the ramps without scraping. I've given up on the Rhino ramps with this vehicle and usually just jack the car up from the side and use jack stands underneath.
Rhino ramps work for my 525i (barely), but I still prefer just to use jack stands instead.

yup when i was changing tranny and lsd fluids i used ramps in the front and jacked up the rear on jack stands.
but for oil change, just buy an oil extractor and suck it out of the dip stick tube. with that oil change is as easy as putting in gas literally

I had one of those pumps but it was messy to use and it left about 1/2 to 1 quart or so in the oil pan. Better to drain the oil out from the bottom IMO.

I have the pneumatic version of the Mityvac pump and it works flawlessly and does NOT leave oil in the bottom of the oil pan. the first time I used it on my E39 I opened up the drain plug and NOTHING came out. Using the biggest tube that will fit, it will drain my full 7 quarts from this car in less than 3 minutes. Unfortunately, while I still have the E39, I now have two BMW's that use the N52 engine (no dipstick) so it can't be used for oil changes on these cars It's great though for other services too like power steering flushes and draining differentials that don't have drain plugs (only fill plugs).

The oil extractor are nice but the only problem I see with them is you don't get the advantage of draining your oil out of the engine from the lowest point. In other words, when you drain from the drain plug, any grit/dirt/sand/foreign objects are drained out due to gravity and the action of draining the oil. Hard to explain but I think you see what I mean.
Its like taking a straw to a glass of water with dirt settled at the bottom. You can suck all you want from the top but you'll do a better job if you drain it from the bottom of the glass. You could use the oil extractor 3 out of 4 times and the 4th time drain it to relieve some of this issue. |

There is a brand called Race Ramps that offers great looking versatile ramps for just about any needs. I've got a pair of their trailer ramps (which has allowed my to get everything from my slammed Z4M to a GT2 Porsche onto just about any trailer), they also have some 2 piece ramps for oil changes, etc. They're a bit more expensive than the Rhino ramps but very durable and lightweight.

is it because the slope is too steep and can't get the car on them? If it is, then I will have no use for them either

My office in Chantilly is not too far from you in Reston if they're still available. Will they fit in the Z coupe?

it's the cleanest way to get oil out. i haven't used it on my M yet but initially i bought it for my parents benzes (thank god they have a dip stick AND electronic monitor sensor). something tells me you just didn't push the tube all the way down to the oil pan. it may not get 100% out but it sure gets close to i'd say 95% out. I measured it first few times by putting the extracted oil back in the oil bottles and it was almost exactly how much i put in for parents' cars.

The rhino ramps fit in the M coupe's trunk with plenty of room left to boot. Thanks again, wildag! You got a nice looking roadster there
