The E36 [longer studs] are only needed if your header flanges are thick, rendering stock studs useless (as they'd end up being too short).

I did jvt headers on my car about a year and and a half ago. I had the thick flanges, and i used the original studs. Longer studs would have made the install easier due to the not perfect fitmet of the jvt headers. They would have been a piece of cake then, not to say they were hard but it would have made it easier.

haha I'm going to be installing the headers tomorrow

I've no personal experience with ESS tunes, but I'm sure they hold their own ground nicely. All these non-FI, non-custom (no live dyno runs while tweaking ECU) tunes are pretty much the same thing from what I understand

The "gains" I experienced from my personal tune with AA was a delay in the torque curve drop and drops with less severity than stock. This was what yielded the higher peak hp's.

Headers are in. I've ran the car for a couple days now, and the power is wow
I'm hoping the ECU's not fully adapted yet, cuz that would mean more gains for me by the time I hit the dynoes

I'm going to go back to the DynaPack where I ran all the others, and I also have the opportunity to run on a DynoJet as well, so I'll post up all the results sometime in January

You should just get the extended ones. I can sell you my stud nuts because I ended up not using them. The nuts are shaped so that just prior to loosening them from the stock studs, they get binded. End result: you eventually back the studs out altogether. If I were to do the headers over again, I'd get all new studs at the same time.

I wonder if these would work:

http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...d.php?t=620183

I have used them on VWs and believe the Porsche guys use them too, the Torx head makes them easy to install/remove. I reused the OE studs or I would have ordered some to try.

wow those look nice! If the thread pitch is the same, I don't see why not

I reused my header studs and nuts in the end. Mostly because the nuts were stuck on a lot of the studs, and therefore I was forced to pull many of the studs out altogether lolll..
Those nuts are so gay they're clearly pinched in the middle, so the stud would have to somehow be held in place while you try to loosen the nut

Wow! This software really rocks. While I haven't had the opportunity to dyno my car yet, since I just returned from putting the ECU back in the car so this is butt dyno reactions only.

That said, I can say I already feel the difference. Gone is any stumbling or non-linear throttle behavior and what I think I feel most is the smoothness of the power. The car no longer falls on it's face at 7000 RPM. Now it pulls all the way to redline pulling hard the whole way. Feels much more "muscular" in the mid revs as well.

It's just a shame that the shift lights and sport button switch functions are not applicable. They REALLY NEED TO REMOVE that from their website! I'm cool with it since they were "bonuses" in addition to what I really wanted, the reflash, but this is customer service nightmare in the works.

Overall, I looking forward to having the ECU adapt and optimize itself more in the coming week. But already, I'm very happy with the result. just thought I'd pass along my impressions.

Have a Happy New Year everyone!

Minsoo

Just got back from yet another track day @ Laguna Seca, and this time with the JVT headers installed, along with the header ECU reflash

I still personally prefer Sport mode off, because I want the full range of throttle control while rolling on the gas mid to post corner.
DSC off always

Car is amazing. All I need is more seat time, and perhaps wider front tires

Here's an update, just in case anyone's been following this thread

My car is in the shop currently for installs of AutoSolutions SSK + 3.91 ring & pinion.
Next Wednesday, I'm going to be doing 2 DynoJet pulls, in which I'll update this thread again, or maybe even start a new thread for less clutter.

I have yet to go back to to DynaPack, since I'm spending a lot of my money on the ring & pinion labor, and I figured a DynoJet would suffice

I've also got wider front tires coming in. Selling off my 225 PS2's and swapping to 245 NT05's to better match my 275 NT05 rears.

You're having your diff rebuilt with the 3.91 or swapping diffs completely?

It's being rebuilt because I couldn't find anyone locally that had an entire differential at a reasonable price. That's why it's costing me so much in labor. But at least it's being done by a legitimate shop lol
And according to the quotes that people have been charged, it's not too bad. The shop is charging me $950 just for the 3.91 swap, and $200 for AutoSolutions SSK install. They're also throwing in a free 1200-mile differential flush after my break-in process.
The shop is called Performance Technic in Pleasanton, CA. A BMW-specific independent shop whom also build custom race cars

You're getting a deal, actually - I wish I'd had my factory diff rebuilt to 3.91 rather than going the Dinan route, which was over $3k. When I asked around, everyone touted going with a tuner diff like Dinan because it was less risky, but anecdotally it seems about half go back because of issues, which mine did.

Yeah, I honestly could have waited to install the 3.91, but since they quoted me such fair prices (especially for such a highly-recommended shop), I decided to just go for it.
The plan originally was to wait until I got an aftermarket LSD (was looking into getting a Quaife Helical), and get that installed while the diff was opened up, but since my car's still pretty low-mileage, it probably would've taken quite a while for the stock viscous to wear itself out.

Sucks to hear that your diff swap route didn't go smoothly =/
That's surprising, because I would've thought that that would be a safer route too?
What kind of issues did you experience?

At least you can sell either the Dinan or factory unit separately when you sell the car.

Nope - you give your diff in exchange or pay $1800 extra.

Apparently Dinan outsourced the rebuilds and about half seem to grind from misaligned parts or something; mine and others started grinding shortly after install. They were good about replacing it, but that sort of hassle is what I was trying to avoid by going with them.
