Why is 3.0si rated lower hp in USA than in Europe?

Does anybody know why the 3.0si is rated at only 190kw (255 horsepower) in USA but 195kw (261 horsepower) in Europe? Is it some kind of emissions like a different set of cats? I've heard about a variable back-pressure muffler. Is that the difference? And if one were to reduce back pressure, would performance increase? Or is it the tune?

Wiki states that it should be 261

If you have the variable back-pressure muffler, just put a Golf Tee in the vacuum line and the actuator will stay open all the time. It gives a nive exhaust sound below 2500-3000rpm.

I don't know if the variable back pressure muffler came on NA cars. I know I don't have it. At least I don't think I do. It's interesting because the M versions have the same hp ratings for NA and euro. If it was a cat thing for NA you would think they would be affected too. I'm thinking it's just the variable back pressure exhaust. But I'm not sure if all 3.0si came with those in Europe.

Are you sure it's not DIN vs SAE numbers?

Actually, the M cars are different. In Europe I believe the engine has about 341 hp, but in NA it's 330. The NA cars have an extra cat. Someone can probably be more accurate with the actual hp values, but they are indeed different.

You know what, porkeybritches might be on to something here. Looking at a German website lists the M3 e46 and the Z4M Coupe at 343 "PS" which is the German word for horsepower (Pferdestärke) but they measure horsepower in DIN which converts to 331.2 SAE HP. On the same website the 3.0si is listed at 265 PS, which converts to 261 SAE HP. So maybe they are similar and it's just a units thing?

Fascinating indeed.

A little more research revealed this: The USA X3 from 2007 to 2009 3.0si is rated at 260 SAE HP (195Kw, 261 PS). Similarly, the 2007 to 2009 X5 3.0si is rated at 260Hp. The Z4 3.0si is strangely rated lower at only 255. What gives? Aren't these the same motor? Why would the SUVs get more HP? Even the 2009-2011 Z4 sDrive3.0 is only rated at 255.

In Europe, all three of these, the X3, X5 and the Z4 are rated 5Kw higher at 200kw (271hp) for the Xs and 195Kw (261 hp) for the Z4. I think this is because the gas available in Europe is higher octane (98) and therefore the tune for all these engines is slightly more aggressive.

So, the bottom line is the European N52 3.0si is rated higher than US cars by 5kw (about 6hp).
The thing I can't figure out is why the X3 and X5 in the USA have a higher rating than the Z4.

I'm just glad I have a tune on my car, it probably gives me back horses lost to the European versions and maybe even a little bit more.

I recall that my E90 330i purchased in late '05 was also rated for 255 hp.

Yep, your right. The 2006 e90 330i also had the N52 and 255hp.

So let's recap
The following N52 motors have 255 hp
330i 2006
530i 2006 - 2007
Z4 3.0si / sdrive3.0 2006-2011

The following N52 motors have 260 hp
X3 3.0si / sdrive3.0 2007-2011
X5 3.0i 2007-2010

The question is what do the X3 and X5 have different? If it was just a tune starting in 2007, why wouldn't they put the tune in all later Z4s?

Don't Euro cars have the N53 instead of the N52?

Not sure.

But still doesn't answer the question of why the X3 and X5 in the States have 260hp. Both use the same N52 motor.
