Aero Skirts Painted with Rattle Cans
Wanted these for a long time, but it always bothered me that the cost of painting was about the same as the parts themselves. Only a couple hundred bucks I know, but the tinkerer in me refuses to pay for labor lol. Found a really good guide for getting "show quality" paint by using rattle cans (link HERE). I think the guy who wrote that is a pro, while I've never done any type of automotive paintwork in my life. Still, the results are pretty good, and all the defects I have are my own fault (not from using rattle cans). I wet-sanded through the clear, paint, and primer like a moron by sanding over the creases in a couple spots. For anybody that's experienced with paintwork, you really could get something high quality
I used paint ordered from bavauto (2 cans), and Sp*****x 2k clear (2 cans) Still needs a good buffing (sweet 6in on the way), but it's love already Last edited by yousefnjr; 05-16-2018 at 10:51 AM.. |

I wonder how this would look if tried with a metallic color, like say titanium silver. Metallic's are much harder to match apparently, as i found out when trying to paint my reflectors myself on my Titanium Silver M-coupe. Just couldn't ever get it to a proper match no matter what i did. Than again i could have just gotten a bad spray paint can from the my unnamed supplier.

It matters a great deal on your technique as you lay your passes down. I've also head that when panting metallics on plastics that it's a good idea to ground the piece to prevent static charges from building up and changing how the metallic flakes lay down.

Yeah i tried all sorts of technique's, varying painting distance, varying amount of paint per coat......made sure i shook up the can well. Tried different number of coats, different number of clear coats...With and without adhesion promotor. .....Interesting about the static charge comment. Good to know......In the end i caved and sent the dam things to a body shop..... |

Great job! However, i wonder how long it will last? I am not sure if the OP used the same paint but i painted my reflectors with Bavarian rattle can and the paint started to crack after couple years. I think the can i got didn't have plasticizer.

Curious to see how long it lasts as well, I'd be thrilled with 2 years tbh.
So far they're holding up well, not supposed to wax them for 30-45 days so I haven't been able to get a full wash in since, just been wiping things down. Doesn't help that I have to hide any car washing from my neighbors either Looking forward to a full detailing sometime in the next couple months, about time to break out the Leatherique too with this heat! |

I bought a Porter Cable due to its relative safety, and it's been one of the best things I've bought for maintaining the car's paint. I'm sure the Flex is so much faster. I was just worried I'd buff my paint clean off the car.

Haha I'm a bit scared of that too, luckily still have the OE skirts to practice on. The body creases on the car that I love so much to look at become a PITA when polishing, have some 3" pads for the really narrow spots. Some of these curves are still going to be a challenge I can tell
Probably overkill for an amateur like myself, but hey who doesn't love a good tool (no homo)

Same here. I've done many detailing sessions but still depend on the PC to keep me from screwing the pooch.

Really surprised with the result. Was skeptical at first.
OT: for anyone wanting to cover their reflectors- 3M have some fantastic metallic and non-metallic vinyls to cover those ugly reflectors. I used their metallic black vinyl on mine and it matches the paint perfectly. The metallic flakes in the vinyl are identical to those in BSM. I'm sure it's the same for other colors.

Close to a year later, still looking good. The color matches the other plastic pieces (door handles, bumpers etc) which is slightly different than the metals, normal IMO. I've only polished once, and haven't washed as often as I would've liked, but the clear is holding up surprisingly well. Going to try and do my front bumper in the summer I think, which should be much more challenging.
Sorry it's raining this week

Great job !
I tried to paint my front Z4M bumper. Bought the rattle can paint custom mixed from NAPA. It arrived as a water based paint which I had no experience with. I did the spray in the garage and within minutes the air was very foggy. I assumed this had something to do with water based spray paint. I wasn't happy and ended up taking it to the body shop, where the tech used a colour analyzer to match the stock paint colour. If memory serves - I recall the stock paint was closest to a Mazda White ! (?) The cost of the custom mixed paint was about $200 (including clear) which I considered the cost of a Life Lesson. You should be very proud of your results. PS - I had previously painted replacement rockers on my Chev Van. It was a metallic grey that I got from Canadian Tire. The reults with that paint were perfect. So I guess you just never know until you give it a squirt ! |

One of the challenges with metallic from rattle cans is the amount of overlap it takes with the small spot pattern from their spray nozzle. Overlap changes the density of the metal flake in that area compared and changes the tone of the paint.
APS Tower paint uses rattle cans with a fan spray pattern similar to a small spray gun so it gives you a better chance of getting a finish that matches. It's still very challenging, but it gives you a better chance. Prep is where the battle is won or lost though. No spray technique no matter how good it is can overcome poor prep. Last tip - because they're afraid of getting a run most people spray from too far away so the paint loses some of it's atomization and partially dries before it gets to the surface. Get to the recommended distance, hold that, and use speed of movement to control application, don't vary the distance.
