I paid about $1,100 (with tax) a few months ago and that included the valve adjustment

Edit - I should also say that the shop forgot to put a pretty big part back onto the car, so maybe you get what you pay for

Should you really be doing an inspection II so soon? Most do it around 50-60k miles/near 100k km

I paid 1200$ for my inspection II

in doing my research i found 1100-1200 was pretty typical for inspection II BUT generally that included valve adjustment... i think you might should try elsewhere for a comparison if you can.

That should include a valve adjustment.
What worried me more than the cost was assurance that they even bother to open the hood.
How would you know? (Without setting booby traps).
That's the main reason I do all my own work now.
I know what got done and who the clown was that did it.

$1200 for insp 2 included valve adjustment. The ** means the small cost of the valve shims you may or may not need. This was at BMW dealer.

No way inspection 2 happens at 30k miles. Someone fucked up resetting the service meter along the way. Inspection 2 for the S54 typically takes place somewhere between 40k~55k miles depending on how hard it's driven and the gas consumption. Mine was done at 47k.

Is it possible that if it's trashed every bit of the 30k that it's due?

Huh? Almost everyone here has Inspection 2 at 22-25K. My car has 18K on the clock and says it will be due in around 5K miles. 47k should be the second inspection 2. Inspection 2 is the first valve adjustment so I would certainly have it done when the car asks for it.

chickdr, that is not true. inspections are based on gallons of gased used OR a certain time frame (i don't remember, 2.5 yrs?), whichever occurs first. your car is due at such a low mileage because it's 6 yrs old now, not because it has 18k.
So I guess a car that just sits undriven for 2 yrs, would suddenly show an inspection being due?

Isn't inspection II the first time the valves are adjusted? Maybe I am thinking of inspection I at 22-25k? I don't think time has anything to do with when the computer tells you a service is due. It is solely based upon fuel usage from my understanding otherwise mine would have said it needed the service long ago. I do my brake/coolant changes based on time(2yr intervals) and 1yr oil changes since I drive so little each year.

Inspection I (which my '07 is in for today at 24k miles) includes the valve adjustment. The inspection indicator still has quite a few miles to go, but my SA got BMW NA to approve it under my extended maintenance because of the age of the car (Build date 07/07). So the computer doesn't suddenly switch over due to age - it only indicates mileage (based on gas consumption). If you want to get it done based on age, you'll have to talk to your SA and get them to approve it (or pay for it yourself whenever you want it).

Also, I will note that when I had my '01 M3 in for the valve adjustment, they don't necessarily adjust the valves - they inspect/measure them, and if they are within spec, they don't adjust anything. So "valve adjustment" is a bit of a misnomer.

There is an Inspection ONE and an Inspection TWO. Inspection ii includes the valve adjustment, Inspection i does not. What inspection does your car need? Have you ever had one before?
edit- looks like you're right, inspection i does include "checking valves"
http://www.zpost.com/forums/attachme...5&d=1347167448

i wonder what I was looking at before that made me think that it didn't. Did they revise it from 2006? Notice it only says 2007/2008 on it.

I recently got a $1200 quote for Inspection II at Enthusiast Auto and they told me "this includes setting valve lash on the engine". Is that the same thing as valve adjustment? Not to hijack but has anyone dealt with them before?

Valves are also adjusted at inspection 1, thats what you're thinking off. Inspection 1 is 30k ish and 2 is 60k ish, but they come early with lots of track days, because they're based on gallons of gas used as the primary meeter.

Early for inspection 1 is like 20k, early for inspection 2 is like 40k. Theyres no way you could have inspection 2 before 30k.

And yes, $1200 for inspection 2 should definitley include valve adjustment. Otherwise it would just be them walking around looking at things, and there's no wheres near 12 hours of labor in that.

If you want the valve adjustment done right, do it yourself, or pay someone on here to do it. A shop quoteing $1200 with no valve adjustment does not know what they're doing.

Are you guys sure that Inspection 1 includes valve adjustments? I was pretty sure it was only in Inspection 2 which is roughly 25K-30K miles?

Edit: It looks like I was mistaken

Anyway, OP, I believe a $1200 Inspection 2 charge would include valve adjustment. They need to measure the clearances anyway so it's not like there's much more labor involved to change out the shims if necessary. Back when I called a dealership for a quote on Inspection 2, they gave me a figure just a little over $1200 and told me that it includes valve adjustment.

I would clarify with them directly so there are no surprises.

I'm not a big fan of Enthusiast, but I have my own reasons
