3.0si Values?

I'm on the verge of buying a 3.0si Roadster, and am looking to pay between $20-$25k for a nice low mileage car, but it makes me a little nervous when I'm seeing some out there for sale at ridiculously low prices. Ex. an '06 w/ 53k for $13,995, and an '06 w/ 33k for $12,899. Both of these have clean CarFax's and look like they're in pretty good shape.

The last thing I want to do is buy a car and a year later have it be worth half what I paid for it. I plan to keep it for a very long time, but sometimes life happens.

Almost makes me want to move on to my second or third choice of cars.

Any thoughts?

From what I've seen it looks like the price range you're shopping is average to below average M roadster money. If I were looking for a perfect, low mileage 3.0si roadster I'd be shopping in the $15,000 to $18,000 range tops - the two you mention seem like good solid deals. I can't see paying $20,000 to $25,000.

Just doing a quick look on Carmax they have the roadster Z4 3.0si's topping off at $23K for an '08 with 17k miles. For an '06 with 50K miles they are asking 19K (in Houston). When I was looking for my coupe recently I used Carmax as a barometer on what price I shouldn't go over as they charge a premium for some of the additional guarantees they offer. (I ended up purchasing my car through them even though I know I over payed, but I did have them transfer 3 car's from the surrounding area before deciding and I absolutely loved the car I decided on.)

In short, I agree with itdnwiwbp, your budget is probably a little high and if those two examples check out they could be pretty great deals.

Well I should have been more exact. I'm including the cost of warranty in my purchase price, so as far as a the actual price goes, I'd say $19-$21k, but still seeing offerings at $12-$13k is a little unsettling.

Where are you from? Thinking of selling mine. I've been going back and forth whether or not to get a coupe. I've got almost 30k miles on mine.

I'm not sure what type of warranty you're looking into or what the cost of it would be but I think your two examples are pretty realistic. Sure, '08s will be a little more and less mileage will drive up the value but if you plan on driving the car, which you should of course, I wouldn't bother paying a premium for extra low mileage.

Texas, but I've bought out of state before.

PM me your price if you'd like.

Those prices don't seem too unreasonable. I bought my 06 M a few months ago for $24K, with 27K miles on the clock, loaded, and a hard top.

Any low mileage one at a dealer will fetch the higher end of the range but I wouldn't hesitate to buy one with over 40k on odometer if it was well maintained. The n52 motor is pretty darn reliable. I would spend 15-18k for a roadster and 17-19k for a coupe. If I wanted a M, tack on 6k to each of those prices (starting at 24k for M roadster and 26k for a M coupe).

If you were to get the 12,899 car I can't see how you could go wrong. It isn't going to lose a lot of value as you are talking about a 9yr old car. Just make sure it checks out on the inspection before you buy it.

No, I don't want to buy it, it makes me nervous that it's priced that low. Tells me the direction of the $20k+ I'm going to spend on one. I understand depreciation, but geez that's a nosedive.

If a car checks out I'll buy it cheap or not. If you contact the buyer and they tell you there are problems they're being up front and honest with the price. Definitely something to that. I doubt many people would randomly price a car low because of issues and not bother to disclose them - they might as well charge market value.

For what it is worth I just sold my 07 3.0si with 30,xxx miles for $19,000. It has all but the navigation. Super clean and 4 new Conti. Extreme DW tires. I included a bunch of goodies too like a BMW car cover, BMW wind screen, and some other stuff. Buyer has no problem with the price. Everyone is happy.

I'll echo this. Don't be afraid of some mileage. I've got 92k on mine and love it still. I've done prev maintenance and have had no problems (did cooling system, control arm bushings, valve cover gasket' belts, etc.). Great car. Being a roadster and weekend toy car makes it price sensitive to mileage - since many are low miles, you should expect a sharper discount for higher miles. So - find the one you like best and buy it.

Yeah don't be afraid of a bit of mileage on these cars. N52 and drivetrain is rock solid and the money you save up front can pay for the wear items, plus you will have a lot left over and you will depreciate much less than a low mileage z4

To me 12k miles isnt even used. Under 30k miles would be pretty low mileage car to me. I picked up my Z4MR with like 35k miles and currently at like 70k miles. No major issues so far (knock on wood) and as others have mentioned the N52 is probably even more reliable.

Is there any price differential in the US between Coupes and Roadsters ... or all much the same (for equivalent engine sizes).

For the Ms at least there is a pretty big price difference. From what I see coupes go for about $5k more than roadsters.

Wow, if you can get an 06 w/ 33k for $12,899, I'd stop wasting time posting here and pick that car up immediately. Had I seen that before I bought my 2nd Z4M roadster this summer, I would have been all over it. That is a ridiculous deal for an awesome car and there's absolutely no way it's going to be worth less than half that in a year. You'll probably be able to drive it daily for several years and sell it close to what you paid for it.
