Need help on M-coupe deal

My Z4 coupe is having its annual oil change tomorrow morning at the dealer and I have been looking at a 2007 M coupe they have on the lot. It is a local car, has only 7.7k miles on it and according to the dealer, had never been rained on while the original owner had it. The dealer quoted me a price both with and without CPO. They claim the CPO costs them $2,950 and they are willing to sell it to me either way. The standard warranty doesn't run out until 1/12 so it has a year and a half left on it and obviously, the CPO stretches this out until 1/14. Is this really their cost to certify an "M" car and if so, is it worth it? The car drives perfectly and I'm going to keep it at home tonight and check it out in detail to make sure it is as perfect as it seems. Clean Carfax, one owner, no accidents.

What do you guys think and thanks in advance for your help?

While I can't comment on the dealer costs, in shopping for a M Coupe, I found the same car is ~$3k more for CPO.

That doesn't mean you can't negotiate for a lower price, but that's a fair markup from what I've seen out there.

3k isn't what it "costs" them to bring the car up to CPO spec unless they replace the tires and the brakes (if thats the case then jump on it because those items together are $3k).

3k is a typical price increase for CPO though. IMO it's probably worth it.

If it's only got that many miles on it and you personally look the car over well enough to be satisfied with the current condition and what's left on the warranty, then CPO isn't needed IMO. Personally, I'd get the CPO to extend the warranty, but that's just how I roll...

And post pics!!

I hear what you are saying re: the tires and brakes but I think what they are talking about is that since BMWNA is on the hook for CPO warranty repairs, the dealer has to pay BMWNA a fee for enrolling the car into the CPO program and this is their cost to do so. I don't really think this has anything to do with the work done on the car prior to selling it.

You could be right, I just know the car has to meet certain criteria in terms of wear on tire, brakes etc. so on most CPO cars they are replaced.

The 3k CPO cost could be added on top I guess, even so 3k seems reasonable for 2 years of factory coverage.

Interlago Blue? I looked at that car over a month ago. Very clean. If it checks out with you I would say the dealer CPO is added insurance. The Z4M's have never moved very fast in Tulsa and you will only see 3 or 4 of them around town. You should be able to walk there price down.....perhaps to cover the CPO.

They had a blue one here about a month or two ago and they couldn't sell it despite the fact they lowered the price down to $28k. Salesman said it was because it missed a service somewhere (even though it only had 13k miles) and they couldn't CPO it. Also, it had no heated seats.

The one I'm looking at is Imola Red with carbon leather and heated seats.

Ask to see a copy of the CPO inspection checklist.
BMW Certified Preowned Checklist.pdf
If your dealer inspects the car the way most dealers do then I wouldn't have a lot of confidence in the inspection. These Bimmers are relatively trouble free and you can buy a lot of service for three grand.
I'd go sans CPO and put the $3,000 in an interest bearing CD.

^^^ WHS. How much will YOU drive it? The car is almost new and is unlikely to have big problems during the OEM or CPO warranty period. Save yourself $3K and bank it.

It will likely be my DD on nice weather days in town only. I still have my 530i that I can use for out of town trips and in the winter time. I'll probably put about 8-10k miles per year on it.

I have the car up on ramps right now and it looks very good. The front fangs have only a very small scrape of paint off them in the corners and there is no other signs of road damage. The brakes look barely used. The tires have 10/32 in the front and 7-8 in the rear. Is there anything else I should be looking for on a 2.5 year old car with less than 8k miles?

Was the 1200 mile service done
Was the every 2 year brake fluid flush done
Is there any evidence of collision repair or repainting
What is the actual production date (on door jamb sticker)

This sounds like about as perfect as you will find for a 3 year old Z4MC. You just have to decide if you like it more than your current car sufficiently to justify the expense. I have been hearing about some serious problems with the N52 engines such as you have in your current Z4. That might be one thing to consider long term.

Skip the CPO if you're only doing 8-10k miles a year. The extra 2 years of warranty won't cover the maintenance (valve adjustments, brakes, inspections, etc.) so I'd save the money.

Hawk:

I took your advise and closed the deal. I decided to pass on the CPO due to the fact the car only has 7,800 miles on it now and will have less than 50k by the time the CPO would have expired. Anyone interested in my 3.0si coupe with only 16k miles, please pm me. Thanks to everyone for your help.
