A new carbon fiber CAI about to hit the market???

Ok, I'm first in line if the price is right and they ship to the USA, SO BACK OFF, but I found this online today: http://www.simota.com/productsinfo.php?ID=368

Looks like Simota IS making a carbon fiber CAI for the Z4M!!!

There is even a picture of one installed and listed.

Item CF610-32

I already emailed "sales" to see what the status is and I am waiting for a response.

crossing my fingers for an alternative to the aFe and Gruppe M, hopefully a nice middle ground on price, quality and sound!!!!

(if it becomes a reality)

I remember reading they were going to make an intake like 3yrs ago. Taking their time that's for sure.

Simota made a GruppeM replica intake quite a few years back when I was still in the E46 modding scene (I personally owned an old Simota; and a friend of mine had a GruppeM, so we could compare side by side). They're definitely not a new company, and this product is definitely nothing new either. Looks like they're just going to copy GruppeM yet again. I suppose for those that want the sound though, the Simota-branded versions will be more affordable than a GruppeM.
But from E46 experience, these types of intakes can and do heat soak; all at the cost of sounding great.

They heat-soak when ur stuck in traffic. As soon as you start moving (I.e track duty) your AIT's are the same as any other intake including stock. "Heat-soak" is thrown around far too much

Agree.

I have an aFe with the RPI scoop, and I ran last weekend at VIR. On my last session, ambient air temp was around 85 degrees. My data logger shows intake air temp on my out lap, in traffic, at 91. Once at speed, intake temp ranged from 86-88 degrees. So, intake air temp with the aFe was really no different than ambient—what you’d expect stuffing air into the thing at speeds ranging from 39 to 130 mph and averaging 79 mph.

Now, I do now have gold foil insulation on the bottom and sides of the aFe, but that’s really just for looks. Before I put that on, back in February, Sabbanick, RandysV10 and I were all at VIR and all running Aim Solo loggers. I had the aFe without the insulation, Sabba the GruppeM (with a tune), and Randy was stock. Sabba and I were I the same run group, and on the same session our intake temps were almost identical and around ambient—in a couple spots the GruppeM showed 2 degrees higher. I’ve somehow deleted Randy’s data file, but from memory having looked at this a couple months ago, his temps were within a degree or two on mine and Sabba’s.

The Simota and Gruppe M look fairly different from one another. I don't think the Simota is a replica.

I'm assuming the majority of people are stuck in traffic more so rather than not

I didn't look into the Z4M one, but the E46 non-M Simota ones that I had experience with were identical to the non-M GruppeM.
GruppeM had a really nice M version though for the E46 M3, and it even came in carbon/carbon-kevlar. Simota did not try to replicate that as far as I know

UPDATE:

I contacted Simota directly and they gave me the name/contact info of their USA rep. The shop was closed today but plan on talking to them tomorrow.

I did contact an oversees dealer and they plan on shipping late September. Price was around $500 US, not including shipping. I am the first USA customer but he's already taken some deposits from people in Europe.

So it looks like this is becoming a reality.

Just placed my order. Should be shipping from overseas in about 10 days, should have it in my hands in about 30 days.

The person I talked to at their USA distrutor said it's most likely very "similar" to the Gruppe M since Simota manufactures intakes for other people as well.

Price was $550 plus around $15 for shipping.

Please post some detailed pictures once you have it in hand...their website didn't have much info on it at all. Is this an oiled or dry system?

The site details said washable and reusable filter, so I'm assuming it's a dry setup.
In any case, I told you guys they were copies
And for that asking price, might as well get a GruppeM eh? Aren't theyaround that price point too?

More like $1,100 and up for the Gruppe, so $550 isn't a bad deal at all, if it doesn't have any issues. It's actually priced to compete with the AFE intake at that level.

Yeah, you MIGHT get a used Gruppe M for around $700 or $800 if you are very lucky.

Usually shipping from Japan is around $75 - $100, so about $1,200 for a new Gruppe M.

aFe is anywhere between $400 - $500 new.

I'll take the Simota for $550 new, then buy a tune for $700 over just getting the Gruppe M.

It's also not often we get new parts for our cars that have been discontinued for 4 years already.

Simota probably thought to themselves "We got the mold from Gruppe M and some extra carbon fiber, it doesn't cost anything to develop, let's throw it out there".

Excellent idea. If it's a quality copy of the Gruppe, I might do the same, myself. I'm still holding out long term plans to get the CSL style CF airbox from ca-automotive, but that's at least a year down the road.

And it is definitely nice to see new parts for our cars, you're right. Bonus when they're well-made, quality parts.

I'm still wishing Tekarbon would expand their product line for our cars, they have some decent stuff.

Not necessarily. An oiled setup is also washable and reusable filter.
