RE-71R decision - help needed!
Hi guys - I bought a set of Michelin PSS for my Z4M Roadster in March of this year. I've done a ton of driving, 4 track days and about 5 AX events - the tires are wiped. The final shot was a 1,200 mile drive from NJ to Atlanta, GA (mostly back roads). I bought the Michelin's since I was daily driving the car to work everyday (50 mile roundtrip) and wanted tires that could hold their own in AX or during HPDE's. I was told that I would go broke if I bought RE-71R's for daily driving due to their treadwear.
I now live in Atlanta, GA and walk to work/work from home (working on a start-up). I don't want the car to be a garage queen, so I use it whenever I have any excuse to do so (grocery shopping, city driving - lunches, dinner, etc.). I plan on doing some fun road trips in the South (Nashville coming up) and will be taking part in the Road Atlanta HPDE by JZilla on October 21st. I need new tires before the track day for sure. I do not see myself taking part in as many track days and AX events as I used to in NJ (primarily due to working on the startup and not having a corporate income anymore, and the lack of events here vs. NJ/NY/PA/CT). However I would like to take part in as many as reasonably possible. Now my decision to buy tires has boiled down to the trustworthy and impressive Michlein PSS, or the RE-71R's. For the aforementioned reasons, price is a major factor. From TireRack.com (prices include tax and shipping): - Michelin PSS: $1,054.30 - RE-71R: $890.40 (after mail-in rebate) Seeking the forum wisdom when making this decision. Need to order tires in the next few days to ensure they arrive on time. If there are any other tires I should consider, please let me know. Thanks! |

I've heard really great things about the 71r except for wear.
I know one guy that's done about 20 track days and has gone through 6 sets.

I made this same choice this summer: I run RE-71R's because my mileage is split 30/70 between track and street.
If I were to do less than 3 track days a year and lots of street driving, I would go with the MPSS because of their mileage warranty (not available for the Cup 2's unfortunately), better ride from the softer sidewalls, and less tire noise. |

Are you running 18s or 19s? I just picked up a set of Continental Extreme Contact DWs on Tirerack for 50% off and free 2 year road hazard. I got 235/35/19 and 275/30/19 tires, shipped with 2 year road hazard for like $630. Best deal on tires I've ever seen, and I like them better than the PSS tires I had awhile back (I've owned prior sets of both). Check those out if they still have some available!

I just received them today as well, construction date was Oct-15, so they're only about a year old. Good deal! |

Then definitely take a look on Tirerack! I just checked stock sizes for you for the Continental Extreme Contact DWs, they have them in stock 225/45/18 and 255/40/18. You're looking at $493.80 (which includes two years of road hazard proection), plus shipping. The rear tires are nearly $100 off each, while the fronts are only $26 off each (the 19"s were way more discounted).
I think this is the best deal you can find on great tires! |

OP, do you have adjustable camber plates installed? If so, what are you current settings?
Also, since you are still looking to drive the car around town, it would be best to run an extreme summer tire like the Hankook RS-3, Dunlop Direzza ZII Star Spec's, or Yokohama AD08-R. All three of these would be vastly superior then the MPSS on track, as they can handle the repetitive lapping without the degradation you experience from MPSS (assuming you have the proper amount of negative camber dialed in to prevent shoulder wear). All three of these tires can be driven daily, are capable of being quite fast on track, and will last much longer then the RE-71's. No doubt, the RE-71 is a bit faster is you are after breaking PB's, but your tire costs will increase substantially over the season. It is always a trade off Since manufactures can list their own treadwear ratings, you will find that there is a bit of variance. RE-71R's are really more in line with r-compounds like the Nitto NT-01. - Ryan

In case anyone is looking to get these tires (AD08-R): amazing grip vs. PSS, they can be flipped (PSS are uni-rotational); however, the tires are rough in terms of ride quality in the city and generate a decent bit of road noise (but who cares when we are at 5k+ RPM.... ) |

Not opposed to your review of the AD08-R, BUT of course the AD08-R will have better grip than the PSS. The AD08-R is an "Extreme Performance Summer", which is basically one step below R compounds. The PSS is a "Max Performance Summer", which is a step below those "Extreme Performance Summer". You're not really comparing apples to apples. You should be comparing those AD08-R to RE-71R as both are in the same category and have similar wear life.

Stuck : RE-71 VS RE-11
Under the advice of this forum and much additional research I'm between these two, RE -71 / 11. They are priced the nearly the same, tough to find available and have similar stats. Anyone have any wisdom/experience to share. Went to my local Tires Plus, $ 999.76 out the door. I asked for any other suggestions, he offered none. I loved my Nitto's, anyone try the NT-05's ? I could save a few hundred $.
Thanks JJ Going with F 235/40 / R 265/35 PS - Everyone agree best for my 06 Z4MR 18 OEM ? |

I have tried re71r nt01 and maxxis rc1
These are tires from same class with similar laptime. Thoughts. Re71r. Fastest of all 3 in summer and normal weather. Best grip but don't take 5-6 laps well like the nt01 in summer time. Lasted me 4 days Nt01. Great tires, very good in summer time (80+ degrees) Lasted me 4-5 days not as grippy as maxxis in winter. Maxxis rc1. Best of all for winter times. Best grip of all in winter and fastest. Lasted me 6-7 days In summer they are crap. You drive 3 laps and then loses grip terribly. I would never run these tires to drive in the streets. So I buy my tires based in the weather. Re71 is expensive and dies too fast. So I don't use them anymore In summer I buy nt01, in winter I buy maxxis. Next year going for Hankook z214. Nt05 and rs3 is not in same league. Pss is in a lower league than these 2. I hate it. Hope I could help

Ran the Ad08r's last year, fantastic tire and faster than star spec and rs3. Only downside is cost but I always wait for discount tire's $100 off $400 promo on eBay. They are just as fast as r888's but last much longer.
