Question Widest tires for stock 3.0si rims?

I'm wondering if anyone can help on this question. My searching has yielded only fuzzy results…

What's the widest tire that would fit on a 2007 3.0si w sport package wheels (with or without spacers)? Currently the car has 225/40R18 and 255/35R18 Bridgestone Protenza RFTs.

I'm helping a friend replace her RFTs with some non-RFT max or extreme performance tires for track (and street) use, and wondering if a wider tread might be possible with these wheels. There seems to be a ton of room, and I know taller tires can fit, but what about wider at the 40 and/or 35 profile? Thanks!
