I think BMW cares less about this topic than you lot.

Yes, the coupe's VIN sticker states just that - M Coupe. Actually, it states M Coupe' - I guess the European heritage is being taken seriously!

No doubt, but this is an internet forum - this is perfect fodder for long discussions that really no one else cares about!

I actually refer to my coupe as M coupe when I talk about it, but see that I have put Z4M Coupe in my signature (here and on M5board) - oh my.

Because folks wouldn't know if it's the Z3 or Z4. M3 folks like designating their M3 in some way too. Otherwise, how do we know which one you have?

Yes, only those who know the production years for the Z3-based M coupe and the Z4-based coupe would know...but maybe they are the only ones that actually care! Perhaps a more relevant distinction is between Z3-based M coupes that have the S52 vs. the S54 engine...

BMW apparently referred to it as a "Z4 M Roadster" when it was first shown at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2006:

On my door jamb it says it's an "M Roadster". All of my purchase docs refer to it as a "BMW M Roadster". On my registration and title it only says "2006 BMW". My insurance paperwork says it's a "2006 BMW Z4" (hopefully there's no extra premium for the M version!).

Personally, I think that the Z3 M Roadster is more properly referred to as the "M Roadster' and that "Z4 M Roadster" indicates the next gen M Roadster. "E85 M Roadster" would probably be more "purist" and probably most correct since most M3 owners refer to their M3 as an E30 M3, E36 M3, E46 M3 or E90/E92/E93 M3, but most non-BMW-aficionados don't understand that reference. But hey, I'm just a newbie, I've only owned mine for two months now!

This has probably been covered before, but I have no idea how to search for such a topic. So...why is there no Z4 emblem on the M cars?
I think the answer is "Marketing".

This is a good question, on my Window Sticker it states 2008 BMW Z4 M Coupe..
There are too many //M badges on the car, I'm thinking about taking off the side ones..

Call it what you want but I'm pretty sure there are more differences between a 2003 2.5i and a 2008 3.0si then there are between the 3.0si and the M. Like it was said, the name, or lack of, is all marketing.

edit: also the Aero side skirts are not //M parts, they are Z4 parts, so yea...

Badges

THe 2006 M Coupes only had an M badge on the left side of the trunk - none on the sides.

BMW released a limited production, new redesigned, M Coupe based on the Z4. The first cars were delivered right after the North American introduction on May 27, 2006. It has a 3.2-litre inline 6-cylinder engine and produces a SAE rated 330 hp (250 kW). It shares many components with the Z4 and with the E46 M3. Other components come directly from the M3 CSL like the cross-drilled 13.7-inch floating front rotors, even though it continues to use the same brake pads as the original Z3 M Coupes.

The second-generation E89 Z4 (a retractable hardtop) was announced on December 13, 2008.[2] The E89 retractable hardtop is not available in an M version; nor is it known as the 'Z4 coupe', as the term 'Z4 coupe' refers to the fixed hardtop model (E86).

The 2006 BMW M features much of the same go-fast hardware used in the M3 coupe. We're talking everything, from the engine, steering system and brakes to the variable differential lock and a handful of suspension parts. The M (which includes the Roadster and new-for-'06 Coupe body styles) also has unique 18-inch wheels and bodywork, not to mention about 200 fewer pounds to carry around compared to the M3.

SO the M-coupe is not just a z-4 with a bigger engine

IIRC didn't the "official" name from BMW change in the middle of the production? I can't remember if it went from Z4M to M or vice-versa but I think I recall it changed one way or the other

Maybe it was the Canadian M's cause mine surely did not and it seems to me they didn't import for sale many more than the M's . They only built 380 in North America for 2006 and 10% Imola red - 38 cars isn't a whole lot - wait till I finish the ESS 445 install

Are you the original owner? If so think maybe yours was an odd ball.
Mine was Canadian spec & Caddyshk had one of the 1st CDN M coupes in the country & his has the side badges.

is it possible your car was debadged prior to you taking possesion?

some of this info is lifted from a website and isn't in your words (evidence in the red text above)... where did you get it from?

Probably wikipedia

It's right though, it's not just the bigger engine. It's a Z4 with a bigger engine, tweaked suspension, limited-slip diff, different bumpers, different hood, and a dusting of M badges.

edit: and a real steering rack

Call it what you want but the Z4M is still a Z4 just the same as the M3 is still a 3-series
