M Coupe 18" Wheels and tire combinations
I know this has been discussed at least 20 times over the years but when you search you get all kinds of combinations of 18 , 19, 17, different offsets, camber adjustments, arguments about colours and what a colour looks like in the sun - baffles me.
Our stock wheels are 18x8 E 42 F and 18x9 ET 32 R Using the calculator http://www.1010tires.com/WheelOffsetCalculator.asp You can see what different offsets do to the edge of the wheel and the tire in terms of how far in or out of the wheel well it goes. How much freeway space is between the stock wheels and the strut on the rear and the front? I would like to bring them out almost flush with no rubbing anywhere and no adjustments to the camber. I would like to run 235 0r 245 front and 255, 265 0r 275 rear. 18X9 E 42 front adds about 1/2" inside and out - can't see that hitting anywhere 18x10 E32 Rear does the same - SO Is there more space inside or outside the wheel and tire to play around with 0 I can't imagine 1/2 inch being a problem - even if the tire adds 1" both sides@ I didn't even mention wheel types shapes or colours cause thats personal preference and would just confuse me more!! Thanks for any information or comments.

Clarifying question: are you looking to change wheels (and wheel size) or trying to get things flush with stock wheels?
Assuming you're looking for new wheels.... Rear: 18 x 10 ET25 or 18 x 9.5 ET 22 will be close to the outside of the fender, 18 x 10 ET 32 is going to rub, and is not going to be close to the outside fender. Here are two examples, on 9.5 ET 22 rear wheels, one with 265/35 rear tires, and one with 275/35 rear tires. Rated M Roadster has 18 x 10 ET25 rear, and that does need to run some extra negative camber to fit with 275/35 tires, but he is also running coils and sitting lower than stock. Front: 18 x 9 ET42 should fit up front as long as you're not running camber washers which push the strut towards the tire/wheel. I am running camber washers, and I need to run a 5mm spacer (ET37) to get it to fit. Stock, stock settings, it should be okay. You may want a 5mm spacer, which you can always add later if needed to get it closer to the fender. Or you could go with a 9.5 ET35 wheel--but that will require more negative camber to tuck in than the stock max of ~-1.2 - - 1.5 negative camber. These things can require a bit of fiddling, as there are a lot of variables in play: suspension (stock or lowered), alignment (negative camber, and negative camber source [washers vs. plates]), tire type (square shouldered vs. rounded). |

Thanks Very Much - both cars look great and mine being an Imola Red Coupe its nice to see them !
So from your link and comments Front - 9x18 ET 42 OR 8.5X18 ET 38 WILL fit with no mods and PSS 245 no problem ?? Rears: 9.5x18 Et 22 or 10x18 ET 25 will handle the 275's ?? Our friends at APEX have a package but the offsets are not listed : I assume they are as you suggested : http://store.vacmotorsports.com/vac-...els-p2719.aspx Thanks again @@@

The 18 x 8.5 ET 38 with 245/40 will fit no problem, no mods. (If you don't plan on running wider tires, the 8.5 is enough wheel for a 245/40 tire, it's the measured wheel width for that size tire.) The 18 x 9 ET42 may require a small spacer to fit. It should fit with most tires, no spacer especially those like the PSS (rounded), but it depends on the tire used. The spacer on the ET42 would push the wheel out a bit too, for a more aggressive effective offset. The fitments for those wheels @VAC are 18 x 9 ET42 and 18 x 10 ET25. No other fitments/sizes are available from Apex for those sizes. You could buy directly from Apex too. They have all the fitments you'd want to pick from, and both EC7 and ARC8s--great folks to work with. Alternatively you could wait for someone to sell theirs--FS threads come up fairly often. |

Finnegan:
Thanks again - I checked on the APEX site and they have: 18 X 8.5 ET 38 for both ARC-7 or ARC 8's for front wheels and 18 x 9.5 ET 22 in both ARC-7 or ARC-8s for rear wheels. SO all things considered if I use either ARC 7 or 8 with 245 and 275 X 18 PSS Michelins it should be pretty easy - no other adjustments. CORRECT ?

Yes, if you run the 8.5 et38 and 9.5 et22 with 245/40 and 275/35 it will fit.
Again, you can run wider wheels with those same tires, but with the constraint of stock alignment range setting you may have rubbing. |

My set up is close dimensionally to what you are thinking about. I have the below spec wheels and tires on with Dinan springs, providing a 3/8 - 1/2" drop. I originally had the Conti EC DW with 255/40 up front, bad rubbing with max camber (no shims, just shoved struts inboard as far as they would go). With 245/45 - no rubbing, but it may also be because the 255s wore away some of the inner fender liner too....
RAC RG63 wheels 18 x 9 et38 w/ Conti Extreme Contact DW 245/40 18 x 10 et27 w/ same tire, 285/35 Dinan springs Hope you don't like the wheels too much, we had only 28-30 sets made, if you can get them off of somebody more power to ya, they won't be making another run of them. I just realized I don't have any recent pics with the springs and different front tires on...will have to try to correct that problem...

well, I can't claim to be the instigator of this deal, but I definitely participated. Used to hang around alot on M3Forum when I had and E46 M3 - just so happened that when I sold my M3 and got into the M coupe, they were doing this wheel build. One of the main guys at RAC has a Z4M and was the reason I was confident I could make them fit - they were made specifically to the E46 chassis.
http://m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=301635 It's a looooong thread, but you can get the gist of the deal. I feel lucky.

I'm running a set of APEX 18x9.5 et35 (square setup) I purchased from VAC with 245/40/18 RS-3 Hankook tires. I believe this set up would work even with 265/35/18 tires.
http://store.vacmotorsports.com/vac-...els-p2328.aspx With this package you have to run with negative camber, I have a set of Vorslag camber plates (-2.5) with AST coilovers dropped about 1.5 inches with zero clearance or rubbing issues. If I was tracking the car, I would have gone with the 265/35 series tire, but since it is daily driver, the 245/40 is sufficient and still "wanders" with road variations. I did add a 15mm spacer to the rears to bring them out to match the fronts. Made a difference in the looks of the car. |
