There are plenty of times (off track) when there is no one around for miles with plenty of opportunity to "play" where the only thing that's going to get damaged are your car and your ego. Hell, the best way to learn how to drive in inclement weather is to find a big open parking lot with no cars or people in it so you can screw up all you want.
you are correct on part 1, i was simply stating that it has been used in recent years at the top level of motorsport.

Part2, whatever floats your boat. just don't kill any innocent moms trying to get their kids to school...

If you believe that driving 65mph beside mom and kids in their minivan on the highway in a straight line is any safer then you are sorely deluded. All it takes is one slight mechanical mis-function of your car or a slight over-correction by you while trying to avoid debris in the road, and you've now swerved into them and killed them all. You've lulled yourself into a false sense of security because it doesn't happen to you every day...but all it takes is once. Oh and for that time when maybe you over-corrected to avoid debris...well perhaps if you had been out on a back road somewhere or in a parking lot learning how to better control your car, you may have been better prepared to correct your mistake (or not make the mistake at all) and save the lives of those precious babies in the car beside you.

I'm not saying my way is right...I'm just pointing out that your way can be just as wrong and unsafe.

I agree, though it's not the popular opinion I'm sure.

Problem with 65 mph is it's too damn boring and no one is paying attention to what they're doing. It's far safer here in Germany where moms w/kids are driving at 80 to 100 mph and I'm picking 'em off at 120 to 140 mph on average (where legal and conditions permit). I feel far safer here at these speeds than in the US at that crawling pace.

The US Department of Transporation (USDOT) just released a two-and-a-half year study confirming that speed is not a major cause of accidents: http://www.autoblog.com/2008/12/18/u...e-of-accidents

Yeah, it's really morons not paying attention on the city streets ... cellphone through an intersection, texting through an intersection ... accidents always happen because one or more parties did something stupid. We could probably have fast highways in the U.S. if people were more responsible behind the wheel.

I think you nailed it on the head there. If everyone actually paid attention to driving it would be better (although my mustang has trouble going over 75 so I don't know if it would benefit me much in the winter )

With all the good of driving in Germany, there's bad too. In the summer, there are so many bugs. Even a short drive will cover the front of your car in insects. Plus, you can count on some idiot cutting you off on the Autobahn (moving into the passing lane) when you're about to pass two or more slower cars driving in the right lane. No matter how fast you're closing on them, one or more will jump over on you because 1) it's their right as they have the right of way, and 2) they're just rude dicks. Not to mention it rains here far more than it's nice. I'd rather live and drive in Italy or Spain.

I couldn't disagree with you more.

The insects in the summer are mild compared to most places I've been. And very few germans act the way you describe in my experience, its mostly old folks or americans who cut you off in the fast lane. The rain I agree with, but I'll take it, so long as I don't have to sleep outside in it

Well of course Americans are worse. That goes without saying to anyone who's been here awhile (I've been here 5 years). I didn't compare. Americans do what they want no matter the rules or conditions. Amercains are known for driving 70 km/h in all speed zones on B roads (where you find speed limits typically 50 km/h, 70 km/h, and unlimited (100 km/h). Germans are at least very consistent, but they will come over on you even if they think they'll have to wait 3 more seconds for you to blast past. They'd rather cut you off even if it means you standing on the brakes. Not all of course, but I don't go anywhere without having to stand on the brakes a few times. Truck drivers are the worst for this. It seems they always pick unlimited zones to pass other trucks, which sometimes can take a minute to do when they drive 1 km/h faster than the guy they're passing.

The insect thing is unpredictable. Some seasons are worse than others. I hope this summer is a bad one just for you! I also live in the wine region. Perhaps that makes it worse?
