Is this a realistic deal for a trade?

I'm looking to trade my Z4 coupe for an M-coupe. I'm thinking I might be able to get it for a 5-6K difference. Do you think that's unrealistic?

My car:
2007 Z4 3.0si Coupe
6-speed MT
Sapphire Black Metallic
Black leather with aluminum trim
Premium Package
Sport Package
M Seats
Heated Seats
14,600 miles

Very well maintained, garaged since day 1, all service records, never smoked in, etc. etc. Some ballpark inquiries have given me 22-23K for the trade-in. I won't know for sure until I bring my car in.

2007 M Coupe
6-speed MT
Sapphire Black Metallic
Black leather with carbon fiber trim
Premium Package
Heated Seats
19,329 miles

1 owner and the warranty is good until 12/2011. It's not a CPO, just a used car dealership I believe. They're listing it at $30K. I've yet to check carfax, but assuming it's clean, do you think the deal (5-6K on top of my trade) would be reasonable? Not sure how much similar cars have been going for lately.

Wow, only quoted $22 for your vehicle?!? That is crazy. I thought mine was worth at least that and I have the exact same car except with 41K miles!

I know that nobody is getting $30K for any Z4M so I would think the 5-6K on top of the trade would be definitely doable!

Careful about the used car lots, have to ask yourself why the car is there in the first place.

Thanks for your feedback!

I'm assuming dealers are lowballing on their initial trade-in offer by at least 10%, so I'm guessing I have a couple thousand of play based on how much they're willing to come off the list price of the M Coupe.

Based on the listings I've seen, Z4 coupes are listed around the $27K mark and M coupes have generally been $29-32K used and $31-36K CPO. However, I don't have much of a sense for how much they're actually selling for. The MSRP gap is around $10K but I'm not sure what depreciation does after a few years. Anyone else with experience or even an opinion is more than welcome to chime in.

Also, what's everyone's feeling on CPO vs. used? Is the premium worthwhile? Say I can get a M coupe around $29K, would it be worth it to pay $31-32K for a CPO for essentially 2 additional years of warranty?

I think $22k is right. Thats about what Mannheim is on a car with less than 20,000. Of course last I saw was October of last year. Could be plus or minus some now.

To be honest I just googled it and found the 21-23 range from October 09. I have a dealer friend at Bmw that I could call. He's a little mad a me though cause I bought my M from someone else in the city.

I've been talking to a dealer who's looking to pick one up at a BMW exclusive auction for me. He seems pretty willing to work for it and I suspect he's looking for at least a $2K profit. Here's one that he found:

2007 Z4 M Coupe
Black Sapphire
Black Nappa Leather
Aluminum Trim
Premium Package
Heated seats
Navigation

BMW factory warranty til 11/05/2011
BMW CPO warranty til 11/05/2013

Does $30K sound like a reasonable offer? Looking on autotrader and the BMW CPO search shows listings for a few used 07 M coupes with comparable miles listed for $31.5K to $35K (there are plenty that are higher). Can any buyers with recent experience provide any feedback on how much dealers have been coming off of CPO prices?

M coupes command a higher price than M roadsters. I think 30K for a low mileage (under 20K) 2007 is a good deal. You will always get low balled on a trade in. Why not try and sell the car on your own then buy your M? You will be in a better position as they only have the selling price to beat you with.

One advantage to doing a trade in my state is that I only have the pay sales tax on the price difference instead of on the whole car. That's almost a $2000 price difference right there. Add the hassle of a private sale and dealing with people just coming to joyride, and it doesn't make much sense to try selling privately.

The thing is, you will likely get more for your car selling it privately so the difference in taxes could be more than made up for. Joyrides are always a risk, but if you go along with the person you minimize the chances of thrashing the car. There are advantages to both, but I would certainly try a free CL listing and see what happens. The OP has a nice, low mileage, well equipped si coupe which should be sought after. In my case buying privately was preferred as I did not have to pay sales taxes for a private party purchase vs paying taxes at a dealer. I saved 2K by buying privately and the seller still got a fair price.

I wouldn't discourage him from selling it outright (or at least trying). The dealer is offering him a pretty fair price considering the tax savings. I know a guy with a 3.0si sitting on his lot (clean car history less than 7k miles) and he can't get 25k for it. It's been there for 6 months. The trade may be the best option.

For other readers:

Be careful about this and be sure to check your state laws. At least in Maryland, you're subject to normal sales tax (6%), even when buying a car from a private party. http://www.mva.maryland.gov/vehicles...g/titlereg.htm

This is why I said "in my case." Of course, laws vary from state to state.
