Overheating..again
Hello all.
So the Z4 Coupe 3.0si is over heating again. it has 86k miles on it. I have replaced the expansion tank and thermostat (both with OEM parts) I have noticed a trend on very cold days when it over heats. Here is what happens: 1. Start the car (sitting over night) and the small engine fan starts to run from the start and car runs a bit ruff 2. Car takes a longer time to get to operating temperature temp (needle in the middle) 3. Car has no heat for approx 10mins after reached operating temperature. After 10mins the heat starts slowly 4. 5 mins after the heater starts working the car starts to over heat 5. Overheating temperature fluctuates depending on driving conditions. After a few minutes the temp gets hotter. Has anyone experienced similar conditions. Next on tap is to replace water pump and coolant temp sensor (lower rad hose) Will this fix the issue or should I be replacing other things? Help is much appreciated....thank you

Could be the water pump isn't performing well and isn't circulating the water through the heater coil very well (nor circulating cool water to the engine). It may be flowing but very poorly.
But #2 -- hmm. Salty

I know the thermostat is partly controlled by the ecu. For that it needs temp sensors. There's one in the hose, but I think there's also one in the block (cylinder head).
Replacing (or checking) the waterpump is definately a good idea. But it's strange that you hadn't had the problems for 6 months, and now that it's cold you get these strange symptoms again. Interesting problem. I dont know if the waterpump is also ecu controlled or that it's always on, but to me it sounds like either both waterpump and thermostat (so open (broken) thermostat prevents the engine to heat up quickly and the broken waterpump prevents enough flow that results in overheating), or a temp sensor and thermostat (thermostat still stuck open and inaccurate temp sensor prevents accurate waterpump control). Or that air lock (but after 6 months?) And what do you mean with the " and the small engine fan starts to run"? I thought it only had one fan on the radiator and it's quite large?

I believe there are 2 fans...there maybe a smaller fan close to the bigger fan. It sound like a fan..and is also present for approx 5 seconds after the car is off

Are you sourcing these from Worldpac by chance ?
Only thing I have used myself the belt itself, my E46 has it and no issues, honestly, for daily driving I think these will serve you just fine. That water pump is not much different from what an OEM one at package price is at the dealer too.

I may be wrong but I believe the OEM pads are actually made by Textar.

OEM pads are Textar. They are very dusty IMO, I bought a set of Stoptechs and really like them.

Thanks for your help all.
My INDY scanned for codes and it was a water pump failure. Although there was no check engine light, there still was a code when scanned. Ended up replacing: water pump, lower rad hose & sensor, Serpentine belt, brakes, coolant. New owner should be happy
