18" forged track wheel
I'm tempted to to make the leap to forged wheels for the track and have some questions. I am currently running avant garde 19" with 8.5 et35 up front and 9.5 et 22 in the rear. No rub on h&r springs with PSS 245/35 and 265/30 tires.
Is it worth going to a square setup? 8 months ago I put a brand new set of tires on the car and for the first time, on a rear drive car, I needed to change the fronts before the rears. The tread on the outside of tire began to tear away. I was told this happened due to high temps and understeer (coming into corners too fast). So if I had a square set I would have been able to rotate the tires but I was concerned about going too narrow out back or rubbing up front. Forged Volks or Apex? Is the added cost worth the weight saving, I'm not sure. Advan's are pricey and most aren't even forged. Are there any other cheaper forged options? I was told three piece are not ideal for the track vs. one piece, something about the barrel and the back part the rim put together with sealant so they don't hold as wheel. Any reasons not to go three piece? As a side not, I plan to switch to r comps for my track set, if that comes into play in the above, let me know. Thanks for any input. |

Three piece seem to be a bit heavier too.

^ This. Lightweight, strong, and should you do a bit of "off roading", not super expensive to replace. I'd leave the super expensive wheels for street/show or race teams that can afford them. Apex guys are great to work with too.

I have a set of 18x11 apex EC-7's same size all round for the exact reason you stated the quality of the rims are OK mine came with lots of blemishes and one was 200gm out of balance but value for money is good.
I am how ever going to get a second set of lightweight forged rims as the apex are still quite heavy with tyres mounted. I'm thinking rotiform blq concave forged. But the guys from apex were good to deal with and had no problem shipping to Australia I would defiantly buy from them again Last edited by lsz4; 08-08-2013 at 03:57 AM.. |
